I like basements. Our house has a basement. Fortunately, it’s a walkout basement which is far better than a fully submerged basement. Not only is it easier to access outside but it makes it feel less of a basement. More natural light. If configured correctly, it doesn’t feel like a basement at all. For instance, if there’s an in-law suite, you want the kitchen and living room area to be exposed to the walkout wall so that there’s plenty of light so it feels like a ground-level home. Our house does have an in-law suite but we won’t be renting it out. Instead, we’ll use the basement suite for our own use… another living room with convenient kitchen for drinks and snacks.
One thing to keep in mind about how much light enters the walkout basement and that is whether there’s a deck above. Walkout basements that lead to a patio with a large deck overhead can still be fairly dark. Regardless, if you have a sloping lot, a walkout basement is a no-brainer.
