Bathroom windows require a little more thought and planning than windows in other rooms in your home. While you want as much natural light as possible, you also want to ensure privacy.
This means you’ll want to consider the view of each bathroom from outside and from all angles, especially from angles where other people may be such as neighbors, passers-by all while taking advantage of letting in the most amount of light.

Options for privatizing windows:
If you have close neighbors, you can always
- use blinds,
- install curtains,
- use sanded glass/stained glass which brings in light but people can’t see the details, and/or
- place the window high up in the room.
I’m not big on sanded glass because it also means you can’t really see outside.

In my view, if you will need to close up your bathroom window, blinds are the best option because they look good and are very easy to open and close and you can still enjoy the view.
Bathroom window placement
Often you don’t have a lot of window placement options because it’s rare to place a window in a shower or above bathroom sinks or next to a toilet. This leaves very little wall space for a window.
That said, our gallery below does include examples of windows next to a bathtub and even in a shower. If you go with a window in the shower or next to a tub you definitely want to ensure there’s sufficient privacy.
Other bathroom window design considerations:
- Frame color
- Window size
- Number of frames
- Frame material
- Number of panes
- Does it open/close and if so, is it sliding or swinging?
- Shape: Bay or flat?
- Glass type: Regular, brushed, block glass?

1. Glass Block Windows
Glass block windows were popular in the 1980’s. While I’m not a big fan, they are a viable bathroom option because they offer light while protecting privacy.
2. Large Window with Roll-Down Blinds (Next to a Tub)
Any bathroom window can be made private with any type of blind. This bathroom uses a roll-down blind which is not quite as convenient as regular blinds.
3. Classic 3-Frame Window Next to Bathtub
When possible, placing a window next to a tub is a nice touch. In this case you can tell there is sufficient privacy that this window need not have blinds.

4. Large Bay Window with Valiance Next to Tub
For the elegant touch go for a bay window next to a tub. It’s fairly ornate but if that’s your style, it works.

This is a fabulous bathroom window which spans floor to ceiling the entire width of one wall next to the bathtub.

8. Skylight Windows in Attic Bathroom
Skylights are a good bathroom lighting option although in this case I’m not sure they provide much privacy unless this is the tallest building around.

I love plate-glass and this is a great example of one wrapping around a corner tub.

If you have the privacy, there’s nothing like a full wall of floor-to-ceiling windows in your bathroom. Being on the water, this home can do this. It’s spectacular. It is odd, howeve,r that the bathroom is situated in the primary bathroom. I’ve seen this before. In fact, I lived in a home where the bathroom was placed openly in the primary bedroom.
