One great way to break up the use of white is with a dark-colored countertop! It doesn’t even have to be black or grey; although those do look rather sharp in a white kitchen, you can use blue, green, or even brown.
Countertops can be made out of a multitude of different materials but above all else, granite remains one of the most versatile materials choices.
Granite is tough and durable – second only to diamond in natural hardness – easy to care for, resistant of staining and bacteria when properly sealed, will last for decades, and comes in a variety of beautiful colors and patterns.
You can use granite to complement or contrast the color palette of your kitchen or use it as the only color. It can be highly polished for a shiny, reflective look or it can be matte and softened, allowing for the color and streaking to show even better.
Not only do these kitchens feature these two key design elements, most of them contain gorgeous and innovative ideas for classing up any home.

This minimalist kitchen is a lovely balance of light and dark. The white-washed look of the cabinets lets the wood grain make a slight appearance to mimic the grain in the grey paneling on the wall. The dark granite countertop complements the woodwork and the dark glass in the stainless steel appliances.

This refreshingly bright kitchen is a fun example of how to use color and keep your kitchen feeling open and inviting. The warm wood cabinets achieve the same light feeling of white cabinets without continuing the same trend. Instead, using white as an accent color in the bar and ceiling makes the room feel larger and doesn’t wash everything out.
The shape of the dark granite counters mimics the octagonal shape of the island and creates a natural flow around the room. Using the blue wall color in the recessed ceiling while bordering it in white bring interest up to the ceiling without making the room feel smaller or darker.
The glistening dark wood floor of this kitchen brings out the dark granite. Balancing this expanse of floor, white cabinetry and walls keep the dark wood from overpowering the room and ensure the room stays open and bright.
