Also known as a cottage style, shabby chic is characterized as a slightly more feminine take on the rustic style. With its shabby chic furniture, vintage style, and everything from beach cottage style to French country and office decor this one is going to have an “outdoorsy” style and feel to it but it’s going to do that with more feminine colors and accents to go along. You’re definitely going to feel like you’re hanging out in the wilderness at least a little, but with a few more of the comforts you like best to go along with it. You’re not going to have so many dark colors but you’ll be ramping up the wood tones and accents with something a little bit lighter to brighten the day. After all, who doesn’t like bright colors and a lot of fun and sunshine in their space? That’s what shabby-chic is really all about.
Distinguishing Design Features
From shabby chic bedroom ideas to dining rooms, chic decor and chic furniture has the distinguishing feature of weathered finishes and the textures that are used throughout. These textures are apparent in the accessories that are used as well as in simple wall décor and furniture. With any that falls under farmhouse decor to cottage chic, you’re going to have a lot of different materials and you’ll have a lot of florals, lace, and pastel shades to go along with the design. When it comes to main features you’re going to feel like you’ve stepped into a garden, which is why this design is more paired after a cottage rather than a regular cabin up in the woods. You’ll find it’s full of some unique things in that respect. You’ll also find a little bit of aging to the pieces, though this is done intentionally rather than just being old items or vintage pieces (though those can work too).
There are plenty of materials to go around when it comes to shabby-chic design styles. You’re going to see a lot of natural materials like burlap and jute. Made into rugs and baskets and other accent pieces, these materials are extremely popular. You’ll also find lace accents and frilly portions of just about anything that you add to the room. The colors are definitely going to be florals and stripes with fringes and other accents to add a more feminine touch. On top of all of this, you’ll find elements of wicker and iron that definitely go along with the cottage feel and décor and work well with the pale colors like floral shades, pale pinks, yellows, and light green.
The furniture in this type of space is going to be primarily made with wood, wicker, or iron. You’ll find that more sturdy and large pieces like tables are going to be made with wood while other pieces like bed frames and chairs may be made of wicker or wrought iron. This will generally be white in color as painted woods (in pale colors) or white wicker and iron are very common accents. You can also find glass or antique style knobs on cupboards and dressers to help add accent and a feminine touch.
When it comes to the decorative aspects of this design style you’re going to find a lot of the same elements that you find in the furniture and other materials. It’s all about white pieces or pastel accents to create the type of look that you’re going for. It’s also all about the rustic style so everything tends to have an antique style finish or a little bit of ‘wear’ to it. The pieces shouldn’t be too rough around the edges or it can cause the style to shift from shabby-chic to full-on rustic.
Pieces that are feminine and floral are going to match the best but pieces like baskets and even rugs are going to be a great benefit as well. These will be made with natural materials rather than simply plastic or artificial items. You’ll also want something with a softer sheen or a little bit of texture without adding too much. If it has a little lace or a little bit of a ruffle to it then it’s going to work out great. You’ll also want to make sure it’s going to add to the comfort because this style is definitely all about comfort.
Why it Looks Great
If you’re looking to go a little bit country without going too far off the deep end you’re going to love this style because that’s what it’s all about. It looks great because it mixes the outdoors with some feminine charm and touches in pale colors, flowers and a whole lot more. You can definitely lean more towards the feminine side or more towards the rustic side to get just the right part of this spectrum for your house and that makes it look great when you’re ready to show it off to absolutely anyone.
