Welcome to our gallery featuring the stunning Manchester home, designed by Baran Studio.
This home was designed to be the perfect residence for a single family in North Oakland, California.
Baran Studio’s aim was to integrate thoroughly contemporary design in a stylistically traditional neighborhood.
They succeeded wildly in this goal, resulting in a home that’s enriched by modern design elements and materials while fitting in unobtrusively with the surrounding homes.
Specific elements like the pitched roof and hung windows make a more concrete connection with the idea of a traditional home, by these elements are often abstracted. The roof becomes a skin that wraps the exterior, while the wrap curls into the entry space like a breaking wave.
These elements perfectly highlight the mindset that went into creating this home, showcasing the incisive mixture of old and new that lead to such a uniquely satisfying home design.
The exterior colors and materials express an industrial aesthetic, helping to thematically link the home to the nearby industrial areas outside of the neighborhood. This adds a sense of context and history to the structure that, while subtle, informs the experience of the home.
Specific elements, both stylish and utilitarian, carry through from the exterior to the interior. These design through-lines create a holistic feeling for the home, connecting every aspect in a singular experience.
As you’ll see in the following images, this holistic approach to design paid off handsomely. The home is a clearly modern creation, yet steeped in the textures and materials of its traditional surroundings.
The sharp edged, angular design stands out on its sloped landscape at night, with large windows offering glowing views into the large interior. The home is bordered by a small natural rock wall, as seen at left.
Seen head-on, we can appreciate how the sloped, rocky landscape contrasts with the angular, neutral toned home. The sharply modern structure rises from the natural landscape in a bold but complementary visual.
Moving inside, we see the vast open-plan layout is flush with bright furniture and flooring choices. The contemporary seating in this room is balanced against rich wood and steel tables, a touch of light industrial style.
In the dining area, we see more of this soft, modern industrial look appearing in the home, an echo of the exterior design. The dining table matches a brushed steel surface with rich wood legs for a unique contrast.
The primary bedroom enjoys expansive views courtesy of a set of large sliding glass doors. The hardwood flooring in here grounds the neutral space, pairing well with the dark natural wood dressers and chair.
The bathroom matches the warm neutral tone of the bedroom, with tile walls matching the color tone of the hardwood flooring. Sleek bath and vanity components emphasize a modern look without overt styling.
From the back, we can see a pair of large balconies leading off from the bedroom and living room, respectively. The open floor plan makes for clear visual lines throughout the interior of the home.
