Contemporary design is recognized in its own distinct difference, though it may have been characterized closely with other influences like modern and traditional designs. It stands out on its own uniqueness through delivering those influences into aesthetically altered designs like minimizing broad and crooked lines and forms into simpler and plane surface.
These are key elements to consider once you want to create a contemporary themed interior.
Pick neutral colours for your furnishing, flooring and walls like shades of brown, taupe, cream or pure white. Having these shades gives your interior warmth, exuding to a more comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.
Moreover, you might want to infuse some metal accents and textures to the design to fully achieve a contemporary look. Also, add it up with touches of lighting through open spaces and windows and wood tones using maple, oak, walnut or the like.
For a closer and clearer view of what are being described, some of the examples of contemporary designs are included here. Not to mention the extra-warmth atmosphere that as much has provide a comfortable, functional and liveable spaces.

If you just look at it at first glance, you will mistaken this as an old fashioned traditional living space because of its warm atmosphere and furnishings. However, if you will examine this thoroughly you will then notice that some of its details are contemporary, like having a few metal accents on the tables, monochromatic tones and bare flooring covered with a rug. Not to forget the open and wide window that allows natural lighting, a few accessories, and the simple over exposed wood ceiling beams.
The beauty of the symmetrically balanced and exposed beams on the ceiling strike a simple and plain linear effect on this hyped up living space populated with overstuffed sofa and chairs in blue and ochre tone covers. No other accessories are added except a few books, flower vase, figurines and lampshades, which are common in any designs. Wide open windows and natural lighting have been the facet of contemporary designs.
The coolness and the comforting atmosphere from the outdoors like the nice color of the blue skies kissing the blue water in the horizon, is brought into the interior. This bathroom has been created with a calming and relaxing concept of nature tossed with a contemporary look. The bluish and pure white coatings on the wall and fixtures brighten as the natural light is reflected to them. Adding a few pink blossoms accents the tone along with dark brown window framing and chair against the wall.
A combination of matte and glossy surfaces. White porcelain tiles and marbled top counter shines as the light strikes on them while matte finish furnishings and walls neutralize the dazzling effect. The warm color of cream and pure white make it more of a contemporary design with all the hidden items and clutter in this kitchen, thanks to the wooden floor to ceiling cabinets and under counter storage cabinets.
Contemporary designs love bare floors with no rug or carpets. Simple lines and form to the furnishing and surface are present. Not to mention the long wood planks on the ceiling, unskirted tables and chairs with no moldings and carvings on the dining area and outside patio. The warm touch of cream and pure white looks shimmering on a wide window and open space lighting.
Unadorned floors may or may not be covered with rugs. Simplicity is what a contemporary design aims for. With this one, a few furniture pieces are present aside from the common sofa and chairs. Simple covered pillows and a few table top accessories are included. An overscaled art or frame may also suit well. While present are the moldings and trims on the arched door, ceiling and window, they keep it simple.
The perfect example of a warm yet bright contemporary bedroom design. The color tones are within the scale of light to dark brown added with cream and pure white tones. Textures are also adorned in the bed sheets and simple skirted curtain, while the wide wooden framed glass door allows natural light to set in.
Warm tones are neutralized with added floor rug in bright blue and red patterns. The grey and dark shades of sofa chairs and bed room bench blends well. This is a bedroom and a living room combo. Simple lines, angles and forms are present though the coffered wall and ceiling moldings spot the difference.
Since wood tones and natural wood materials are always present in any contemporary designs, this one may have been overwhelmed with wood. The intricacy of wood carvings are minimized into simple and shallow details with only straight lines, simple geometric forms and plain surfaces. The floor is simple, clutters are hidden and light is very much welcome with the wide windows.
Only one to two geometric forms are present like the rounded decorative mirror, rectangular frame, tiles and drawer designs. Simple lines and curves are also present with usual warm tone paint and color combination. Wood tone never misses an appearance.
What do you notice with this bedroom? This is utterly not a warm toned one right? But this quite gives the room a contemporary sophistication with an exception of having bright neutral colors. Other than that, the room is filled with simplicity, smooth textures and simple vanities. The floor and wall to ceiling remain unadorned and plain.
The balance of shapes and colors is visible in this design. Take a look at some of the geometric figures hanging on the wall like squares and rectangles; they look decorative but not over-designed.
