My wife and I used to live in Crescent Beach, British Columbia which is an ocean-side village neighourhood. While it’s a gorgeous community, it’s vulnerable to flooding especially if there’s the slightest storm surge.
New houses built there are being built up on stilts or have the garage low. Regardless, the main living spaces need to be elevated due to flood risk.
Many houses throughout the world near or on water are built on stilts, pilings and/or piers. They can be found throughout Asia, in Europe and in the USA such as Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, New Jersey, California, Oregon and Washington State.
Some are built on stilts that are always surrounded by water while others are on the beach and are built on stilts in order to avoid flooding in high tide or storms. And then some are built on piers.
Below we showcase 25 cool and very different houses from around the world built on stilts.
