  • Defined by contrasts and variety

If you want to mix contemporary style with a traditional room and match a little bit of everything then chances are you’re looking at an eclectic style. This isn’t really just one style in your home. Rather, modern eclectic is made up of several different design elements of styles and color schemes that are going to create a unique atmosphere that is entirely up to you. After all, you’re not going to find many pieces that are actually labeled as eclectic. Instead, whether it is the living room or the dining room, you’re going to find a whole lot of pieces from different design styles that you can mix and match together on your own to create something that is eclectic.

Distinguishing Design Features

Eclectic Interior Design StyleThe main portion of the design when it comes to an eclectic style is that most things are brought together by some form of commonality. The pieces are generally not entirely random (though they definitely could be). Rather, they have some type of similarity in color, texture, shape, or even finish. Something about the pieces will generally bring them all together and help them seem to go together, even if they’re actually from different time periods of different overall styles. This is how you create a cohesive style out of pieces that are from different style zones. If you don’t have something to link them together it can look a little haphazard and messy.

Materials

There are going to be a number of different materials present in this type of room because anything can be brought into an eclectic room. In fact, you’re generally going to find a mix of fabrics and a mix of different colors to go along with them as well. They could be patterns, textures, bright colors, deep colors, neutral colors, or anything else in between. They can even be a mix of all of these things at the same time. That’s because you’re going to be pulling inspiration from anything that you like rather than just one area. It’s generally going to be better if you are able to pick a couple central colors that you will use to pull things together and create cohesion. It may not be easy, but even if you use a neutral color that most of the pieces feature you’re going to be better prepared.

Furniture

Eclectic Interior Design StyleYou’re definitely going to find some differences when it comes to the furniture that you put in this type of room as well. That’s because all of the pieces could be from a range of different styles as with everything else in this style. Of course, they’re generally going to be pulled together at least a little bit with different fabrics, different paints or even different finishes. Because it’s an eclectic style you could easily find anything from a refined finish to a rough finish that goes together, though, usually you’re going to pick one aspect of all of your pieces that you try to join together so you can get a good fit and a comfortable feeling room.

Décor Accessories

Eclectic Interior Design StyleYou’ll find all kinds of different accessories in the eclectic style of interior design. That’s because accessories are where you’re really going to get a little bit crazy and start pulling things that seem to have nothing in common with each other. You may have a Victorian style accent lamp alongside a modern style throw rug. Maybe you have some art pieces that are from the traditional interior design style and a lamp that actually hails from the craftsman style. It’s going to be entirely up to you to decide how you want to mix and match things to get a unique look and feel.

The most important thing is that you have something larger to tie things in. If the accent pieces don’t really match that’s not going to be an issue. If you don’t have some larger pieces that look like they fit the entire room is going to be a bit of a mess and that’s definitely not the idea you’re going for. Pick out the eclectic pieces primarily in the décor and leave the more base aspects of the large furniture pieces and you’re definitely going to be off to a much better start.

Why it Looks Great

Why Eclectic Interior Design Style Looks GoodSo what is it about the eclectic style that looks so great? Well, no one is totally sure because when you look at each of the pieces you’re going to get a jumble of things that don’t look like they match. But when you take the whole you get an idea that’s definitely beautiful and unique and helps showcase your favorite styles. The best part is that you’re going to have a great looking house or room that you can keep adding to however and whenever you want. Just make sure you have things to tie it all together or it will just look like your college dorm back when you had to take leftovers from everyone.
