It Doesn’t Have To Look Like A Factory
The industrial living room design is characterized by brushed concrete or metal surfaces, exposed steel, hanging elements, dark leathers, and “steampunk” widgets affixed wherever the designer sees fit. In a nutshell, the industrial living room can look anywhere from postmodern to a frigid mess.
In many ways, less is more when it comes to designing the perfect industrial living room. Keep industrial elements like exposed concrete or ceiling rafters, but don’t be forced into awkward gear-laden lamps because of it. Using deep-hued color is a bit of a faux pas when it comes to industrial living room designs, but there are a few exceptions that you’ll need to exercise.
For one, dark leather—particularly for the seats—is an acceptable choice. For a less saturated color for use in tables and lamps, try brass or pewter—they’re a bit less intimidating than steel and reflect artificial light better.
Don’t Let The Aesthetic Become Too Cold
Light tends to be the bane of industrial living room designs, but it doesn’t have to be. Industrial living rooms typically look their worst when bathed in natural light, and look at their best when their artificial lighting conditions are their only source of light.
Artificial light should be warm, and mindful of how it will reflect off of the brushed metal and concrete surfaces. The reflection of light is typically the point at which the industrial style living room can either look the tiniest bit inviting, or completely and empty, so be sure to experiment with a few different lighting options and figure out how much light and what hue of light will bring out the best of your design idea.
