We recently purchased a small propane-fueled fire pit. We went with a small portable version for camping so we can have fires during wood-fire burning bans.
However, if you wish to enjoy a fire pit in your backyard and want an easy-start, non-smoke emitting option, propane-fueled patio fire pits are an ideal solution.
In fact, they’re insanely popular. They look fabulous and offer warmth, ambiance and of course roasting fun in your own backyard.
Here’s a little info about patio propane fire pits.
The Fuel
Propane fire pits are powered by a liquid propane tank which is often stored in a drawer or closet. It is actually very easy to light and burns quickly in comparison with wood burning fire pits. It does not emit smoke or even create sparks. Clean up is also very easy with this type of fire pit since you do not need to clean up ash. It also creates the same ambiance as wood fire pits.
With regards to assembling a propane fire pit, its size, materials and price range varies significantly.
First and foremost, you have to consider the tank size you want to use for your fire pit.
For standard propane fire pits, a 20 lb. propane tank is enough and you can use an 18โ burner ring for it. However, if you want to use your propane fire pit for longer, you can use larger propane tanks that you use for your home. Their duration varies significantly depending on what size your propane tank is and what settings you have for your fire pit. According to some users, a standard 20lb tank would last 3-4 hours if you use it on medium settings.
Depending on how big your tank is, it will determine how big your fire pit enclosure should be. However, you need to follow the required 36in2 total venting on the sides or 18in2 for two opposing sides. It should also be 48โ away from any ceiling or combustible structure and 12โ away from combustible decking if you use one for your fireplace.
Propane fire pits are like other gas fire pits with regards to the necessity of using fire pit medias that would disguise your fire pit and protect it from any type of moisture or other elements. The first fire pit media that you can use are lava rocks which look like normal rocks. However, these rocks are very durable and can conduct heat easily. They are also available looking like river rocks made out of ceramic fiber.
Fire glass is also used as a fire pit media. In this case, the fire glass is made out of small crystals and in various shapes. Unlike lava rocks which tend to deteriorate over time, fire glass can last for longer. If you want the authenticity of a real fire pit, you can also use ceramic fiber made fire logs. Like fire glass, these logs can last forever due to the material it is made from. It can even withstand higher heat temperatures.
