This kitchen was both a challenge and a pleasure. David and Tue approached West & Reid with a simple brief – “make us something beautiful”. They loved West & Reid’s work and placed their trust in the designers to come up with a unique design for their kitchen. West & Reid wanted to do something a little different so they had handles specially fabricated from 3mm thick brass, for a really solid chunky feel. The handles are precision fitted into a rebate behind the doors and beautifully complement the European walnut. It looks stunning, and because the brass is unlacquered it has a beautiful, soft patina that will continue to develop over time.

The sink and tap are also made from unlacquered brass, commissioned especially for this kitchen. There are also fully wrapped brass doors, brass end panels, and brass plinths.

Consort Road, Peckham

The starting point for this kitchen, in a stunning two-story glass extension on the border of Peckham and Nunhead, was the exposed douglas fir beams in the side return. Hannah and Mark wanted West & Reid to pick up that detail in the kitchen design but didn’t want to be overwhelmed with wood. West & Reid settled on dark green (supermatt) doors in a douglas fir frame, with douglas fir floating shelves and wall units. The stainless steel worktop, only 20mm thick, and the concrete tiles complete a beautiful pallet of different materials.

Turnery Road, Dulwich Village

This lovely kitchen was a delicate balancing act, finding the right materials and style to work with the marble worktop, unlacquered brass tap, and handmade encaustic cement tiles that the designers’ clients had already set their hearts on. West & Reid were able to source a really special piece of iroko for the island – an old chemistry lab worktop, which, after some careful repairs, paired beautifully with the tiles.

Their clients wanted everything to be low level, so they put an integrated drawer fridge in the island, as well as another integrated fridge and a freezer. A larder in a side room meant there was plenty of storage space despite there being no tall units. All the other cabinets were full height drawers, and the mitered door fronts were hand-painted to keep a soft, textured feel to the kitchen design. In the adjacent snug, West & Reid contrasted high gloss spray painted doors with other single pieces of reclaimed iroko, complete with ancient school graffiti!

Beacon Hill, Holloway

This beautiful kitchen is made with European walnut veneered birch plywood. West & Reid suggested this veneer as their clients were having a reclaimed oak parquet through most of their kitchen, and the designers thought the darker colors in the walnut would make a nice contrast with the light oak floor. European walnut is quite different from its American cousin – with a more interesting and varied grain.

The unique design of the island was planned to accentuate the exposed laminations of the birch ply, with the whole island completely framed in veneered birch ply, with the corners of the frame mitered. Continuing that theme, all the drawers in the kitchen were also made from birch ply.

West & Reid also reflected this design in the spray-painted cabinets, with a double thickness mitered ply frame around the units, and a walnut plate in the handles. These units were built flush to the wall, to appear as if they are part of the fabric of the house.

Camden Hill, Crystal Palace

The routed handles in this Crystal Palace kitchen design reveal the beautiful laminations of the birch ply behind. The drawers are cut from the same piece of veneered plywood, so the grain runs seamlessly across each union. A pull out drawer fridge under the worktop allowed the client to keep the full width of this run, kept light and open by the single wall unit (housing the extractor) and floating cherry shelves. The sink is thermoformed into the Corian worktop.

West & Reid’s clients were building a modern extension in their Victorian terrace and wanted a classic bespoke kitchen design to bring the old and the new together. The designers made them a simple, pared-down in-frame hardwood shaker kitchen, a timeless, classic style, which never grows old. The doors and frames are made from beech, hand-painted in Farrow and Ball “Railings”, while West & Reid made the drawers from oak with dovetailed joints. The unlacquered brass handles and catches are the perfect match for this style and color, and when the kitchen was finished it was hard to imagine anything else working as well in the space.

Arodene Road, Brixton

This kitchen incorporates a number of the designers’ favorite styles: dark, spray-painted doors in Farrow and Ball Railings are complemented by cherry-veneered end-panels and plinths, opposite which are runs with cherry-veneered drawer fronts with scoop handles. Three-meter long cherry shelves float above the long run, while the scoop handles in the tall units are backed with cherry to break up the slab of dark blue.

The island features the plywood framed cupboard that West & Reid also built in the Dalkeith Road kitchen. Inside, the island unit is arranged like a Rubik’s cube, with cupboards varying in depth to accommodate a pull-out bin unit on one end, and a shelving unit on the other. As is always the case in the designers’ kitchen design, the grain of the cherry runs seamlessly across the drawer fronts.
