Blue kitchens are in this year. Whether a splash of blue or lots of blue if you’re designing or renovating your kitchen, consider some blue. Hopefully the series of photos below give you some ideas.

A splash of bright blue dramatically jazzes up this kitchen. I love it and I’m not big on bright colors but this works great.

Blue is a great color to build into your kitchen design. Blue has a lot of versatility as a color and can act as a substitute for a white or a black if you pick a very light or very dark hue respectively.
Blue also is a great accentuator of texture of tiles, cabinets, or countertops, and can be adapted to a variety of different lighting conditions
Pair With White
You’ll probably end up pairing your blue kitchen items like cabinets and wallpapers with other features which are white. The contrast between blue and white can be gentle, creating a more infantile and playful look. Likewise, if you’d prefer a more serious kitchen, you can make your dark blues contrast sharply with bright whites.
This brings up the main division when developing blue kitchen ideas: do you go with a dark blue, or with a light blue?
Going with a navy blue is the less popular of the two options because it tends to make your kitchen seem a bit smaller, although if used sparingly you can still pull off a beautiful design. Sky blues or baby blues are generally the better choices.
With lighter colors of blue, you’ll be able to work in appliances of all sorts, which is essential because you may not have control over the color of your appliance. This is much harder when you build your kitchen around a navy blue, as sometimes it results in too much darkness.
Natural light also reflects off of lighter blues in a very pleasant way, as opposed to being absorbed directly by darker blues. If you have strong interior lighting, navy blue is still a viable option because the reflection will bring out some shine from the darker colors.
The decision is ultimately up to you, but don’t forget two final tidbits:
- Lighter blues are more easily discolored
- Darker blues hide dirt and damage
- It’s easier to repaint light blue objects than dark blue objects
The final caveat with making blue kitchen designs is to avoid incorporating too much black or orange. Black clashes too much with blue to stay pleasant and the blue/orange combination that’s so popular everywhere else tends to play out a bit awkwardly when it comes to the kitchen because of the ever-present wild card of appliance colors.
