Founded in 2008, Norm Architects is a Copenhagen-based practice working with design to enrich the human experience. As multidisciplinary architects and designers, we consider our work as a facilitation of well-being, as a distillation of aesthetics that resonate with the unique person and place, and as a system that supports universal human needs.

Each project – be it architecture, interiors, or products – exemplifies minimalism infused with a larger aim to re-sensualize the built environment through haptic designs that embrace mind and body. As we work, our goal is always to find the essence of the design no matter its scale or location to create buildings, spaces, and objects that connect with the innate human desire for belonging, autonomy, and identity.

Our expertise lies in recognizing the moment when there is nothing more to add or take away; when function meets beauty and the work feels as good as it looks.

The basis of the structure is a dark basalt platform house with a shadow gap between the land and the plinth, giving the impression that the house is raised above the ground.

The building has a certain humility about it, realizing that the main attraction in the environment is, indeed, the countryside.

There is a harmonious merging of old and new structures, as well as a modest L-shaped shingle border that brings the buildings together.

The Pavilion House is an inside-out building; the shapes and materials of the interior all convey a sense of peace and simplicity, while each room provides a unique view of the outside.

All of the pieces, even the small modern fireplace on the colorless wall, complement each other nicely.

Because of its setting, the plain-toned house dining area provides a tranquil ambiance.

Darker colors have been used in the restrooms to create a sense of a sense of sanctuary and a sense of isolation.

The addition of polished concrete gives the space a more tactile feel.

The design of the house is all about transparency; nature becomes an integral part of the interior. With a delicate and minimized steel construction, wooden window frames and a vertical cladding in local larch that corresponds with the existing structures on the site, there is a harmonious meeting between old and new buildings.

The exterior part of the windows and fascia board of the roof in dark carbon grey metal make the steel as subtle and discrete as possible so that the wooden character of the house becomes the dominant expression.

“A pavilion house of this length, surrounded by an imposing countryside, needs to stand proud and so we introduced a dark basalt podium as the foundation of the house with a shadow gap between the land and the plinth which has had the effect of seeming to raise the house from the land it stands on.”

Further increasing the presence of the house, the existing annexe has been extended to create a studio, with windows in a rhythm that responds to the fenestration of the main house and a simple L-shaped shingle border, bringing the buildings closely together. The additional space now offers a music room with a grand piano, a comfortable TV area as well as a quiet workspace. Elsewhere, a sauna has been added, with grand views over the fields.

Designed by Norm Architects back in 2017, but never completed, the current homeowners took on the project of bringing back the building to its original vision. “It is hard to think of this project outside of the pandemic. To have had a period of time in which it was possible to concentrate fully on something which had stalled, but had so much potential, was a real privilege,” they say of the process.

“What we saw in this site was the potential to live in a way that is beautifully aligned with nature. The house provides a wonderful place to get together with our loved ones in an environment where there is time, space, light, and new possibilities.”

Pavilion House cannot be thought of outside of the context of the surrounding countryside and the furnishings, as a result, follow suit. The feeling of the space is one of tranquillity, and it has therefore been important that the entirety of the interior plays a key role in tying together the contextual and spatial characteristics of the project.

Wherever you find yourself in the house, there’s a seamless transition between its different functions. Wherever you choose to look out, you’ll find yourself fully immersed in the glorious surroundings; the architectural structure never spoils the stunning views.

A key decision was to half the size of the existing barn, as its 5000 sqm dominated the site and was quite oversized. The new homeowners found it difficult to imagine how it could ever be used appropriately within the context of a residential, as opposed to agricultural, use.

The barn that was left standing was repurposed to carry a generous number of solar panels for electricity generation with ample storage batteries inside the building, together with a rainwater system. Today, the barn has thus become a veritable eco-workhorse.

“The removal of half of the barn had the effect of revealing new and wonderful views from the house as well as from the newly built studio in the annexe. We removed tons of concrete around the site in order to create a new landscape for the house to stand in, as well as a space for a terraced seating and dining area.

Seeing through the logic of what had been started by the original owners, the renovation project has allowed us to to move from a residential building surrounded by agricultural buildings and machinery in the middle of a farmyard to one that has become the principal form, set elegantly in its surrounding landscape.”

When you are visibly surrounded by nature, you compete with it at your perils, why color hasn’t been added to the walls – reinforcing the integration of interior and exterior.

In the bathrooms, darker colours have been introduced to create a sense of sanctuary and a feeling of separation from the surrounding countryside, which then becomes even more magical and picturesque when viewed through the carefully placed windows.

The use of polished concrete adds a tactile sensation to the room, while acting as stimulating contrast to the warm elements of wood.

“Working with Pavilion House, we got the opportunity to create an environmentally efficient and friendly dwelling that would mainly depend on its own electricity generation. In short, this is a place for rest and exploration, a counterbalance to the challenges and opportunities of a full-on life in the city.”
