The Miami Seaplane Terminal is a conceptual design by Hughes Umbanhowar Architects. It’s a unique plan that’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
Once the project gets finished, the goal is for it to become an international landmark and recognized by visitors across the globe. The purpose of the terminal is to emulate the thrill and excitement of traveling on a seaplane.
People that are using a seaplane as their method of transportation will have their adventurous journey extended when they reach the terminal. From a distance, passengers will be able to see the terminal as they approach before landing. Once the plane has touched down on the water, it will be a surreal experience as the seaplane pulls up to the breathtaking structure.
Inspiration for the Design
The concept is meant to look like an organic coral reef. In nature, these reefs are a bridge that connects the ocean to the earth. It’s comparable to how the building will act as a channel between the ground and the sky.
It’s also important to recognize the function that coral reefs play in our ecosystems. Their scientific, social, and leisurely, significance in our society was another reason that the architect used coral as the inspiration for this unique concept.
More Than a Terminal
In addition to the terminal and hangar facilities, the structure will also have a tower with a restaurant and lounge area. You don’t need to be a pilot or passenger to enjoy and experience the restaurant and lounge of this facility. It’s a great way for Miami residents and visitors to experience the beauty of airplane travel, without having to leave the ground.
The terminal will have an observation tower as well. Locals and tourists can check out the public observation tower that’s a boasting 120 feet above the water. The architects have designed the concept to have a natural platform for the observation tower.
From this tower, viewers will have a chance to see more than just the approaching seaplanes. People will be able to see the city of Miami and beyond from the platform. Furthermore, people from buildings, planes, and helicopters will be able to see the terminal from a distance as well.
Overall, the project will create a stunning landmark to the already beautiful and recognizable Miami landscape. It’s the total package. The terminal will create a functional location for seaplanes to port, as well as add to the social atmosphere of the lively Miami culture.
