About Architect
Kouichi Kimura, 1960 Born in Kusatsu City, Shiga prefecture, Japan, 1991 Established FORM / Kouichi Kimura Architects. “His works, mainly residences, are characterized by a poetic and functional minimalism in which a sense of openness and privacy is achieved through careful slicing and layering of wall elements, light and shadows, volumes and spaces.” – RICHARD MEIER
The site faces the old highway that was once bustling with merchants and travelers. The north face is in a privileged location where a river runs across the road and you can see the mountains in the distance. The building has a modern form, but the design is reminiscent of a traditional house that draws out the charm of this location.
The dynamic form in which the volume of the gable and the shed roof overlap forms the outline of the interior space as it is. Inside, there is a sense of tranquility and openness, and the lines of circulation centered on the 3-story atrium create a variety of places to be. The tall walls block the line of sight from the surroundings, while at the same time playing the role of a “sundial of light” that reflects patterns of light and shadow that change in motion.
The sequence in which the beams of light coming in through the high-side windows that match the slope of the roof and the space blend together brings a quiet uplifting and extraordinary feeling to the living space. This house stands comfortably along a historic road, leading residents to a beautiful and rich life.
