Cuisine has come a long way from the days of eternal stews and campfire roasting. A modern kitchen looks nothing like those nostalgic methods, and the future is sure to hold more changes to kitchen design. These 28 futuristic kitchen designs will inspire chefs ranging from home cooks making instant meals to trained professionals using molecular gastronomy.
1. A Brilliant Yellow Kitchenette Alcove
A small kitchenette with an oven and sink sits in an alcove surrounded by curving walls of bright yellow. The mix of minimalism in the kitchen and unique shapes is decidedly futuristic, but I wouldn’t mind a few more gadgets – like a dishwasher.
2. Pop Tech in the Kitchen
A blast of yellow and a retro vibe give this kitchen an atomic tech aesthetic along the lines of the Fallout series. The cabinets are set a bit high, and the counter at the end has grown an additional oven and sink that are unnecessary.
3. A Minimalistic Yellow Kitchen
Swirling walls and crevasses in the counters make for an interesting look to this yellow kitchen. Even if the counters open up for storage, the odd shapes would make some larger pots and pans hard to put away. The bright color and plastic sheen make it look like a pretend kitchen in the kids’ room.
4. A Kitchen for Mechanical Precision
Complex polygons and lines reminiscent of circuitry enhance the techy feel of this kitchen. The space is split between a recess with the majority of the kitchen equipment and another room with a computer-assisted island. The fridge appears to be near the island, but the object could be an AI oddity.
5. A Royal Red Kitchen
A shining red that resembles a certain sci-fi emperor’s guards covers every surface. The robotic kitchen island bristles with gadgets and storage space. While the red comes on strong and the layout suffers from AI warping, I feel like it would be fun to cook in this kitchen.
6. A Future Fish’s Last View
Correcting for the fish-eye lens, this kitchen has a compact yet efficient layout. Red and black plus metallic accents create the same space empire aesthetic as the previous concept, but it is much less garish.
7. Cooking in the Pod
A massive red pod holding the oven commands attention, and it could be a workable feature without the storage space underneath it. The kitchen counter has extremely limited space with no visible sink, so the concept would need a high-tech architect to properly finish it.
8. Red Alert for Hunger
The urgency this red kitchen inspires might help when cooking on a deadline. Locating the sink and stove is difficult, and either the oven is tiny or the kitchen features a countertop dishwasher. It’s not the most futuristic design, either, although the fridge hearkens to the atomic tech vibe again.
9. A Kitchen that Blends the Natural and Artificial
Looking from the polished fern green interior of the kitchen to the view of trees in its windows transports the viewer back and forth through time. The kitchen layout is functional but small, and the seating area in front of the window takes advantage of the serenity outside.
10. Miniaturization Is the Future
All of this kitchen is crammed into a single counter. The refrigerator is nowhere to be seen, but it is hopefully somewhere nearby. Although the layout raises serious questions – such as the purpose of putting a seat in front of the oven – the island could be improved upon for a workable tiny kitchen in smaller homes.
11. Going Green in the Kitchen
The fully green interior hopefully means the rest of the tech is more energy efficient than modern machinery. In the future, people will apparently hate having more than one counter, so the functional parts of the kitchen are close together. Perhaps the large cylinder is a new type of oven – or even a giant air fryer!
12. An Absolute Unit of a Kitchen Counter
This single counter has everything needed from a kitchen except storage. The broad body of the green and white counter bristles with knobs and buttons, the purpose of which might not be known for years to come.
13. Putting the Kitchen on Ice
With so many blue reflective surfaces, I would be worried about reflected light distorting the appearance of food. The crystaline sharpness of the detailing would put this kitchen right at home in an ice-world palace.
14. The Future of Diner Dining
Despite the tech gadgets, the curvature and coloring of this concept lives as much in the 1950s as it is in the 2050s. The delicate blue decals on the white surface even bring a hint of grandma’s porcelain collection to the mix.
15. A Liquid Cooled Kitchen
Deep and glowing blue streaks around this kitchen, causing it to glow like an over-engineered gaming computer in the middle of the night. My own computer fits that description, so I would absolutely be on board with my kitchen looking like this.
16. A Baroque Blue Kitchen
Exquisite detailing trails the counters and walls of this metallic, steely blue kitchen. It’s a bit on the small side for the level of ostentatiousness, and the sink is missing from the shown portion. For a future noble working with limited space, it could make sense to splurge on artistic design.
17. Cooking through the Eye of the Robot
Space-age curvatures and clean design look out through a porthole that could be an eye in an oversized mechanical construct. The open space and ample countertops make this one of my favorite kitchens in the set, but I still would like to see more cabinets unless there’s a 3-D dish printer.
18. Forging the Perfect Meal
Deep black surfaces set with subtle orange accents form a cramped kitchen that could be the galley in a spaceship traversing the stars. The AI couldn’t decide where the table ends and the floor begins, and the alcove in the back could hold a sizable refrigerator instead of the peculiar cabinets.
19. A Galley in Spaceflight
Soft lighting in a dark, somewhat narrow kitchen creates an intimate space for both cooking and dining. While bigger than some of the other concepts, it still maintains a sleek design perfect for a high-end space yacht or station. A bit of color wouldn’t be remiss, but the concept is an elegant starting point.
20. Hack Your Diet in this Tech-Heavy Kitchen
A busy countertop has a screen centered above it, which would be convenient for looking up recipes or watching entertainment. The fridge is oddly displaced behind the counter next to another section of the room. Beyond the need for rearrangement, the dark black with orange accents once again works well as a futuristic coloring.
21. Play with Your Food
Most of these futuristic concepts have been austere and minimalistic, especially with regards to color, but the vibrant rainbow of hues in this one promises that the future still has fun. Aside from one too many irregular windows and a curving layout, this could be a modern concept as much as a futuristic one.
22. Critical Cooking in a Dark Metal Kitchen
Dark colors and metallic surfaces paint this factory of food manufacturing. The counter to the right hosts the oven and working surfaces, while the back wall hosts a variety of machines that could be used to craft a meal with perfect precision.
23. Technical Cooking in Technicolor
I again appreciate the exuberance shown in the choice of bright colors. The oven even has an opalescent rainbow on its side. Between the lively colors and ample opening for natural lighting, this kitchen’s atmosphere soothes the soul almost as well as my cooking.
24. Blue and Pink around the Kitchen Sink
A mellow pink hue sits between a barrier of pale blue above and below it. The more monotone color scheme seems less invigorating after recent ones with multiple colors, but it doesn’t have the metallic gleam that makes them even more imposing.
25. A Rainbow Kitchen of Flavors
Blending the best aspects of the past few concepts, this kitchen is primarily blue with a striking rainbow of color around the counters and back wall. Even the layout is well done for the AI, including both the essentials like cabinet space and welcome extras like the circular island with overhead lighting.
26. A TIE (Twin Ingestion Engine) Kitchen
A long, rounded kitchen counter looks up at a window not that different from the opening to the iconic viewscreen of villainous sci-fi starfighters. Polished whites and grays have a refined look that promises the utmost accuracy from the multitude of kitchen gadgets.
27. Meal Prep on Mars
This single counter kitchen peers out over a desert landscape that could be on the red planet or another celestial body. Keeping the kitchen small makes sense on interstellar journeys with limited carrying capacity. White as a primary with mild orange trim fits the kitchenette, so I’d only rearrange some of the counter features to make this work.
28. A Pristine and Clean Space for Cuisine
The crisp white color, sharp lines, and excess of tech in this kitchen could fit just as readily into a future surgical center. Oddities like the sprinklers on the side or the container with a glass door in the back inspire the imagination to come up with possible purposes for their inclusion, but the left half of the concept works well on its own.
