This elegant basement remodel makes the perfect teenage hangout area and will easily convert into an area for grown-ups in just a few years.
Located in Aldie, VA, these clients contacted 2 Navy Lane to work on their basement space, after we completed their main floor remodel. Their goal was to create a basement space for their teenage daughter and her friends to be able to spend time hanging out after school, on the weekends, and for slumber parties.
The clients wanted the space to be able to grow alongside their family and be easily converted from a teen space to a space they could entertain their adult friends when their daughter leaves for college, in a few years. When we began, the basement was a place where they rarely spent time and wanted to hang out. We got to work on this basement remodel to turn it into an elegant coastal-inspired teen getaway!
Timeless
Wear-and-Tear Ready Touches for Long-Lasting Beauty
With a house full of teenagers, spills can happen and this family will be ready for them! The sectional with a chaise on one end, has a performance fabric to ensure any spills or accidents are no big deal. This sectional also has an ottoman that slides in and makes the sofa one large bed to hang out and watch movies or it can be pulled away to double as a coffee table.
The client can choose which type of relaxation suits them best. The navy blue custom pillows and navy leopard print bar stools behind the sofa were custom upholstered in a bleach-cleanable fabric. A subtle coastal look was incorporated into this basement remodel with illustrated artwork, drum-style side tables tiled with capiz shells, and a large area rug. A neutral color palette with very light blush pink touches and sweet blues are reminiscent of days on the beach.
Function
There is ample seating for TV watching, eating, and hanging out. The conversation area includes four more chairs, offering another place to sit and chat with friends in a more updated โspeakeasyโ look and feel. The limestone veneer wall gives way to the cool, fun vibe, along with a Sputnik chandelier to offer dimension.
The space is equally as accommodating for chatting about high school crushes and spilling secrets, as well as enjoying a bottle and waxing philosophical with adult conversation. The chairs circle around a bold coffee table that brings in another eye-catching element made of Paldao wood, which is loved for its warm tones and striped patterns. We tied in the main area by utilizing the same rug, in a different shape, and bringing in custom pillows with navy and a cream chenille stripe.
We know that where teenagers are, so are their cellphones so we made sure to include plenty of USB outlets for friends to plug in phones and other devices. The lamps on the table behind the sofa have USB outlets and we hid some under the countertop on the kitchen island, as well.
Home
The new kitchen in this elegant basement remodel features cabinets in a very light, subtle gray and new layout that was more conducive for traffic flow and people coming in and out from the pool. While it may be a high traffic area, itโs designed for comfort, elegance, and peace with soft-close hinges (shhhhโฆ) and black and brushed nickel hardware. The glass front refrigerator is always stocked with refreshing beverages and accompanied by a large pantry ready to go with late night movie snacks.
Navy blue floating shelves are the perfect spot to house popcorn bowls, glasses, and accessories and can easily be transformed into a top shelf bar when the space is used for adult socializing. This custom fish tank is a conversation piece and the centerpiece of this hang out space.
We left the footprint of the original bathroom but brought it down to the studs and added new tile throughout the entire bathroom. We revamped their existing steam shower with new fixtures and all new tile and a frameless glass enclosure. We love the gray and white wave ombre tile on the shower walls and the carrara marble penny round tile on the shower floor.
The floor tile is a hexagon-shaped honed marble mosaic in glacier white and ice grey for a fairly monochromatic, clean, look and feel. The rich quartz vanity top brings in a little sparkle and the bold color vanity in a rich navy and brilliant acrylic hardware for both the knobs and pulls.
