The funny thing about the average size of bedrooms in the USA is that they have increased over the years while the average size of families has decreased. For the past 30 years, families have decreased by 25 percent, but the house size has grown by almost 50 percent. Square footage of a house in the mid 1970s was around 1500 square feet, but since then, it has continue to grow to over 2000 square feet. It seems that we have determined we need more space for less people. I remember growing up that I had to share a bathroom with everyone in my house and now my two children think that it is a tragedy that they have to share a bathroom between the two of them.

Master Bedrooms

The master bedroom in the house is the largest of all rooms. A master bedroom tends to take up about 11.3 percent of the space of a typical house. If you are looking at a home that has new construction, the master bedroom is about 14 feet by 16 feet, 224 square feet (20.8 square meters / 32,256 square inches). Today’s master bedroom is more like a master suite. Most master bedrooms come with a walk in closet that can often measure 150 square feet. I cannot even imagine having a master suite that does not include a walk in closet. A master bedroom should be at least large enough to hold a king size bed, which is 10 feet by 12 feet. Keep in mind that you most likely have other furniture in your bedroom, so it must be larger than a king size bed. Typically, a master bedroom is a rectangular or square shape, but can be found in other shapes.

The average ceiling height today is 9 feet (2.7432 meters). Many of us feel cramped with a ceiling that is lower than 9 feet, so people opt for 10 foot ceilings. Fifty years ago, in the 1970s, the average ceiling height was 8 feet (2.44 meters). It may seem like 1 foot should not make a huge difference, but an additional foot really opens up the room. There is a standard height but there is not one standard size door for a bedroom. There are, however, several standard door width sizes for bedrooms. A typical door height is about 80 inches. When it comes to width, you can get a door that is 24, 28, 32, and 36 inches wide, depending on your preference.

Windows are an interesting feature of your room. They add natural sunlight to a room, as well the potential to bring a unique look to the room. There is really nothing typical about windows in a room. There are so many options, however, a typical measurement of a window is what is considered a 3838 window. That means the window is 3 feet 8 inches wide by 3 feet 8 inches long. You often find many windows in your typical master bedroom.

Kids Bedrooms

Kids bedrooms are often much smaller than the master bedroom. That makes sense, right? If I am paying for the house, I should get the biggest room. The kids bedrooms are also considered the standard size bedroom in the house. There are often more than one standard size room in a house. There are some common characteristics of a standard bedroom. They usually have only one window and a much smaller closet. They do not typically have a walk in closet. It is also common to see that these bedrooms are converted to another rooms, such as a gym, or a study. Standard bedrooms take up about 17 percent of the house size.

The average size of a kids bedroom is 11 feet by 12 feet (132 square feet or 12.26 square meters), but can be as small as 10 feet by 10 feet (100 square feet or 9.29 square meters). One of the key factors to determining what size you want your bedroom to be is the size of your bed. If you have a queen size bed, you want your bedroom to be at least 10 feet by 11 feet to ensure that the bed fits well in the room. You also must remember that you want to fit other furniture in the room and you must account for that. If you are planning to put a twin bed in the room, you want your room to be at least 7 feet by 10 feet. This is also the code to which a bedroom must be built. Anything below that is not up to code.

When it comes to other aspects of the room, the average measurements tend to be the same regardless of whether it is a master or standard size bedroom. Just like a master, the average ceiling height for a kids bedroom is 9 feet (2.7432 meters). For a bedroom to be up to code, the ceiling height must be at least 7 foot 6 inches high. Similar to a master bedroom, in the 1970s, the average ceiling height of a standard bedroom was 8 feet (2.44 meters). Just like with the master bedroom, there is a standard height but there is not one standard size door for a bedroom. There are, however, several standard door width sizes for bedrooms. A typical door height is about 80 inches. When it comes to width, you can get a door that is 24, 28, 32, and 36 inches wide, depending on your preference. You have some flexibility on the type of door you want to select from a typically opening door or a sliding door. If you choose a regularly opening door, you can choose in which direction you want it to swing.

Windows are an interesting feature of your room. They add natural sunlight to a room, as well the potential to bring a unique look to the room. In a kids bedroom, you typically only find one window, but you can put as many in the room as you would like. Other than that, there is really nothing typical about windows in a room. There are so many options, however, a typical measurement of a window is what is considered a 3838 window. That means the window is 3 feet 8 inches wide by 3 feet 8 inches long. You often find many windows in your typical master bedroom.

Quotes From Architects

I reached out to several architects to get quotes for the cost of adding a master and standard bedroom to a house. Some of the architects did not respond to me. Some responded but when they found out I was asking for quotes for an article, they did not want to give me a quote since I was not doing real work to my house. I was surprised at how few people responded to me.

Brett Hand Architect, P.C

Brett was the one exception. Not only did he respond to me within an hour, he was helpful and responsive. He knew that I was not actually doing work, but he still talked to me to see if he could understand what I wanted to know, so he could give me an accurate quote. He told me his hourly rate is $125 and the amount of time it take to build a master or standard size room depends on the materials that are used. He told me that building rooms typically cost anywhere from $3,000 to $30,000. If you are interested in learning more about Brett or contacting him about a new room or renovation to your existing bedroom, click here.

The average cost of adding a new bedroom on a house ranges from $50 to $250 per square foot. At the low end, which is $50, a master bedroom at 224 square feet will cost around $11,200. For a room that costs $250 per square foot will cost about $56,000. For a standard room at 132 square feet, the low end of the cost is $6,150 and at the higher end is $33,000. As you can see the price jumps up quickly. The material used for the room, along with the finishes can push up the cost of your room addition quickly. If you are considering hiring an architect to design your room addition, you should know that is going to add anywhere from $875-$2,500 to the cost of your addition.
