Carmel-by-the-Sea, or Carmel as it is most commonly called, has been a city of culture since the early 1900s when the Carmel Arts League was formed and 1906 when it became a refuge for artists escaping the devastation of the San Francisco Earthquake. It is home to Clint Eastwood, who was also the townโs mayor, and some of Americaโs most famous artists, writers, poets and photographers with over 80 art galleries and festivals taking advantage of the natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula.
Its quaint enclaves are a favorite for romantics – one of Americaโs most popular wedding sites – and might be the most dog-friendly city in the United States with no mail delivery beyond the townโs main post office and free doggie treats in many of the area businesses. Doris Day lives in Carmel and is part owner of the Cypress Inn where humans can enjoy afternoon tea with their pets in the innโs living room.
Although the classic postcard picture of Carmel includes Old English-style estates and shingled cottages, the area also has a number of cutting-edge contemporary homes. One of the most imaginative, Tres Paraguas, is going to auction on August 15th.
Located on the secluded and private five-acre summit of Gentry Hill in Carmel, award-winning architect Ron Mann designed the home of five buildings, positioning all to take full advantage of the Monterey Bay and Jackโs Peak forest views. Built in 2012 at 12,481 square feet, there are four bedrooms, six baths, an open floor plan with 18-foot ceilings and disappearing 12-foot glass walls that open to courtyards and terraces, joining the inside and outside.
The master suite has separate his-and-her dressing rooms and long-distance views. Also included are a swimming pool, spa, and outdoor kitchen. An open floor plan leads to terraces, good for large scale entertaining.
Perched on Gentry Hill above Carmel with ocean and forest views, the Tres Paraguas estate will be going to auction on August 15th with a reserve of $11.5 million. Previously listed at $18.5 million.
