If you’re anything like me, you have had the sincere privilege of working from home for the past couple of years. As excited as I was to be doing remote work, I was not at all prepared for what the meant! I don’t have a home office, I have a Macbook with a tiny screen, and I didn’t even have a desk for the longest time!
This meant that I would often spend my entire work day shifting around my house, switching from awkward and uncomfortable position from the couch, to the kitchen counter, to the bed, to the back porch, to the couch again.. I would end the day actually feeling more sore and stiff than any other job that I’ve had!
I know I’m not the only one who has developed terrible posture from working on a laptop for hundreds of hours. You know what the remedy is for this? Purchasing yourself the perfect home office desk and corresponding chair.
But you don’t have to take my word for it, since I obviously am not an expert on desks. We’ve hired a fabulous group of interior designers from all over the world who have very graciously provided us with some of their favorite desk brands. How to Pick the Perfect Home Office Desk
There are so many desks to choose from out there, it can be overwhelming! And no two desks are created equal. There are so many different sizes, heights, depths, levels, storage options, and more. Before you dive in and choose a desk, there are some important questions to ask yourself first:
How will you be using the desk?
Now this may seem like an obvious question, but knowing how you’re going to be mainly using the desk is going to help you answer the following questions more easily. For example; I like using my desk for my laptop, to do crafts, and it also doubles as a dining room table when I have guests over since I don’t have a table for that.
You’ll need to establish if you’re going to be the type of desk user with extra screens, a keyboard, a mouse, or if you just like to use your laptop. Are you more of a note taker by hand or on the keyboard? Are you going to use the desk after work hours?
Answering all of these questions will help you determine how much – if any – storage space you’re going to need, and how specific you have to be about the sizing to optimize your seating position (where you can then determine the proper type of chair for the optimal home office set up).
What is the right size of office desk for you?
Now the surface area of your desk is very important. This is especially important if you do a lot of office work by hand. You’ll want all of your office supplies within easy reach, which is usually on the top of your desk.
Lots of people also work better if they have nice things on their desk. For example, I have special trinkets and plants all over the surface of my desk, it makes the work day feel a little bit easier and more relaxed.
I once made the mistake of buying a desk that was too tall compared to my chair (the chair wasn’t adjustable) and it ended up being awful for my wrists and neck. Make sure to measure the height of the desk before you purchase it to see if it’s compatible with you chair.
Do you need desk storage?
The way you use the desk will also depend on the amount of storage you need. All of my work stuff is stored on my computer, so I don’t need storage. Others will need drawers for important papers, office supplies, and that cheeky mickey of whiskey that people always seem to have stored in their bottom drawers in the movies.

The Best Low-Budget Home Office Desk Brands
LVTD
LVTD (short term for eLeVaTeD) is a super cool furniture design company that is based in Denver, Colorado. They create custom furniture pieces that prioritize timeless designs, sustainable materials, and they create furniture pieces for any client including offices, restaurants, hospitality, or your home.
Samuel Grout is not only a fantastic interior designer but he has a ton of experience in furniture design as well, and that is why he chose to recommend LVTD to us. He understands that the quality of a custom piece just can’t be beat by one of the bigger companies. This is how he expresses his love for LVTD furniture pieces:
“Sometimes it’s the simplicity of a design that makes the boldest of statements. That seems to have been the goal for LVTD during the design of the “Homework Desk”. The form bolsters an incredibly minimal form that assembles in minutes with a screwdriver and a little bit of elbow grease.
Launched during the Covid pandemic, LVTD developed this product at exactly the correct time. This writer would label it Scandinavian in design style and wholly American in intent and practicality. Wohomo
Wohomo is a furniture company that sells their products through other websites. Sites like Amazon, Pinterest, Wayfair, and Facebook all have rave reviews, talking about the high quality of the office desks that Wohomo makes. Customers also seem to appreciate the ease of assembly, the sturdiness of the desk, and the quality considering the amazing prices!
Ahmet Can Ozkara is a wonderful interior designer who recommended Wohomo to us because he really appreciates what being on a budget means! Wohomo is an awesome furniture company who actually provides really affordable stuff at a high quality. This is what Ahmet had to say about them:

Ikea
I dare you to find a single person you’ve ever met who hasn’t had an Ikea desk at some point or another in their lives. The price point of Ikea items really can’t be beat along with ease of assembly. Though some may turn their noses up at the quality of Ikea furniture, you would be surprised by longevity of these items.
Andrea Zivic often uses Ikea as a go-to for her clients who are on a more strict budget. Especially when it comes to something like an office desk, a lot of the time, less is more. People aren’t looking for super ornate or unique desks, they just want something that works and its drawers roll out easy. This is what Andrea has to say about Ikea desks:

It’s always exciting to find a furniture company with such sublime style, and we have Artur Baja to thank for this recommendation. If I’m honest, we’ve been working with Artur for a few weeks now and his sense of style is just impeccable and timeless.

Okay wow. Tina Martindelcampo is an interior designer based in Los Angeles, so you know that she is probably constantly getting clients who work from home and really need to have the absolute perfect desk for their home office space.
I didn’t know that a company like this existed, but now that I think about it, of course it does! Uplift is a super cool furniture company that is dedicated to helping you create your absolute perfect custom desk. Something that they specialize in is making standing desks which are known to have a ton of benefits, but listen to what Tina has to say about them:

I’m already obsessed with Urban Outfitters and all of their silly tiny tops and gorgeous accessories and lounging outfits, but I haven’t really dipped my toes into their home goods until now, and I have Mairead Belcher to thank for that!
Mairead is based in Vancouver and is used to working with clients who are just as dedicated to following the furniture trends as she is. Urban Outfitters know what the young people want, and apparently want they want is the Mia Lift-Top Desk (commonly purchased by university students). When it comes to choosing the perfect piece of furniture, there are several big name furniture companies that are commonly recommended by interior designers. One of these top brands is AllModern, and this isn’t the first time that Samuel Grout has recommended this company to us. Why? Well, he’ll do a great job of explaining it himself:

Office Furniture Concepts Incorporated is a furniture company based out of Florida that specializes in creating furniture specifically designed for the office in mind. Their priority is creating items that are functional, ergonomic, and can help increase your productivity at work!
Sometimes the look of a piece of furniture isn’t the utmost priority for some clients, and Ahmet Can Ozkara (who we mentioned earlier) is well aware of this fact. Since some of us are getting really used to sitting at a computer all day, having the perfect office set up is essential to productivity. This is what Ahmet has to say about the desks from OFC Inc:

Just like she mentions in her quote below, I too was incredibly taken with their designs when I first visited their website. Be warned, this company is so popular that they are constantly out of stock of almost all of their items!
Made just does things right. They’ve got a ton of different options on their site, and no two designs are alike. They have incredibly unique and attractive pieces, and they go beyond the standard design of desk. They can be colorful, fun, and stylish, all the while staying true to being ergonomic and functional.

Zoro is just one of those furniture companies that you need to know. Purchasing a home office desk from Zoro means that you’re investing in a piece of furniture that will make your work day seamless. It’s important to have everything in its place to have a successful work day, and Zoro can ensure that!
Tina Martindelcampo has designed many home offices within her career, and more often than not, people will choose function over fashion when it comes to their desk. She’s graciously given us two specific recommendations of desk models:

Zuri
Honestly I don’t even know why I bother providing an intro to Samuel Grout’s recommendations. He just knows furniture. He knows how to look at furniture, he knows how to examine furniture, he knows how to talk about furniture, and he certainly knows how to sell your furniture! He referred to the Ford Adjustable Desk by Zuri as a hunk for goodness sake!

Hekman Furniture
Hekman is an American furniture company that has been in business for over 90 years. They are dedicated to creating quality products from beginning to end, including the people who make them, the materials they use, and the designs they follow.
But don’t take my word for it! Ahmet Can Ozkara recommended this company to us based off of nothing but positive personal experiences, and if you check out the reviews of Hekman furniture, you’ll very quickly find that there are nothing but pleased customers. There are plenty of people out there saying that the pieces they purchased from Hekman have lasted over 20 years, and they’re still going.

I absolutely love Anthropologie and I have for years. Have you ever smelled their candles? To die. But Anthropologie is so much more than boho chic clothing and gorgeous accessories. They have an absolutely top-notch branch of their company called Anthroliving that is totally dedicated to everything home.
Anthroliving is the type of place you shop if you want something that is different and unique. If you’re looking for a piece of furniture that is nothing but function, you gotta go somewhere else. The stuff they provide is just gorgeous and will bring a pop of fun to any room you put it in.

Even if you can’t afford an item from CB2 (though their prices are actually totally reasonable), going on their website just encourages inspiration for beautiful spaces. Their style choices are absolutely exquisite, and CB2 is often at the top of everyone’s favorite list.
Beyond that, CB2 is a great company to work for and a great company to work with. They provide gorgeous pieces of furniture along with excellent customer service. It isn’t one of those situations where a piece looks gorgeous but only lasts as long as a plain white t-shirt.
These items have longevity along with style. You really can’t lose with CB2. This is what Mairead had to tell us about her favorite desk from them:
