One of the most popular deck features these days is a pergola such as the deck above (source: Zillow DigsTM).
The above pergola design is a little different than most. Most pergola tops are parallel boards sitting on their side. The above is a checkered wood frame with some squares using lattice woodwork. If you’d like more shade, you could place lattice woodwork in every square.
Pergolas are fairly easy to construct, are pleasing to the eye and offer a little shade while not totally obstructing the sun.

The example above is a large Pergola that covers the entire deck area, but you can also build decks where the pergola is restricted to only a part of the deck.
