BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK:
A residential house for a family of five, a sober proposal that does not reveal the magic it holds to the outside and can only be experienced by crossing the threshold with the previous consent of its inhabitants. A new essay on the close relationship between the exterior and the interior, the management of different spatial scales, and a bold eclectic design enhanced by the presence of nature.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The house was designed as a large blind block towards the street, which provides privacy and arouses intrigue by not showing any intention of protagonism towards the exterior. What can be seen from the outside is the presence of a large tree, which articulates the main space, the double-height dining room where the cantilevered stairs are the protagonists. Therefore, this space lives in tension between the large tree (poplar) at one end and the family room (upstairs) at the other.
The changes in scales occur progressively, responding to the level of intimacy that the user encounters. From the street, access is not frank, it “hides” laterally, compressing to a low height, as if making a gesture of respect, then changes when opening the door and finding the courtyard with the large tree, finally overflowing when discovering the double height.
To emphasize the relationship between the interior and exterior, a “ball” stone wall inspired by traditional “albarradas” runs from north to south of the project, starting at the poplar and ending at the multipurpose area (sometimes an exercise area, other times a playroom) and the pool. The color palette is very simple: plastered walls with chukum finish, others in white, steel and aluminum toned in black, wood in floors, walls, and ceilings, rustic stone on the vertical planes and polished on the horizontal ones, and to top it off, the green of the vegetation that floods the house and serves as finishing touches and breathing spaces for several areas.
ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTION:
The architectural program proposes the public area on the ground floor and the private area on the upper floor. The social spaces (dining room, living room, terrace) are supported by a service block that faces west (kitchen, laundry room, storage room, garage). Also on this level are two wildcard areas located at opposite ends, which can be used as public or private depending on the circumstances (guest room/study, gym/playroom).
The upper floor houses the bedrooms, one of which is larger so that the two daughters can share, the eldest son in a single room, both with their bathroom/dressing room, and the couple’s friends with a bathroom scheme with separate functions and a larger dressing room. The family room/study precedes the master bedroom and becomes a focal point and visual control towards the rest of the house. On this same level, isolated from family life and with independent access, is the service room with a bathroom and closet.
