All Restoration Hardware furniture is highly customizable from configuration to hundreds of upholstery options. In fact, many items, if not all, are made to order.
I spent hours at the Austin, Texas Restoration Hardware gallery to bring you the details on all the bedroom collections that they have on display. I tested out each bed frame model in the showroom for stability, durability, quality of materials, to give you all the information about what it really looks like!
Methodology
Now, before I set up with actual reviews, let me give you a little background. Since preference and style is a personal choice and you may not agree with my opinions. To provide you with an idea of how I approached this review, let me lay out what’s important to me, my family, and the vibe I want to create in my bedroom.
Our bedroom needs to have a very relaxed, calm vibe. Both my wife and I are very in-tuned with nature, and so we tend to lean towards incorporating natural elements, like reclaimed wood and items that have a more rustic vibe. I’m also drawn to a more old-world, vintage styling, as well.
I have an affinity for all things old-world and vintage, with a distinct romantic edge. Think about bed and breakfast in the English countryside.
We also have a dog that sleeps with us, though he mainly stays under the bed. He likes it under there, and I’d like a bed that has enough room underneath that he can get his bed under there, and we can clean out his furballs easily. Other than that, we’re looking for something that’s going to last, is durable, and checks off our styling preferences.
Now that that’s out of the way let’s get to the bedframe reviews!
RH Bed Frame Reviews
Lawson Collection
Details:

Overall Impression: So the one thing about Restoration Hardware is that the floor models are always only one sample of a configuration you can get. The Lawson sample didn’t have the nailhead detailing or sheltered headboard, but that’s okay – neither of those things is really my style.
This was a simple headboard at the 56” height that I thought was pretty solid. As I checked on the sturdiness, I did notice a significant wobble when pushing on the headboard.
However, if you’re putting this up against a wall, I don’t think it would be much of an issue. It was pretty sturdy otherwise, and clearly well made. However, I didn’t like that the frame itself goes all the way to the floor.
It would make cleaning underneath it nearly impossible without moving it, and of course, I can’t store anything under there. The positive note to all that is that my dog wouldn’t be able to get underneath to leave his furballs that I usually need to clean out!

Overall Impression: What really struck me about this bedframe was that the headboard is significantly wider than the bed. It was right up nestled into the nightstand, and really brought the whole room together, and gave it a cozy look. The headboard height here was the 46”, which I much prefer, especially with how wide it is.
I think the taller ones would look silly in my space, anyways. Unfortunately, there is zero under-bed space. Also, while I think fabric bedframes can be nice in some bedrooms with a specific style in mind, they’re not really our style. Also – I’m not a fan of the linen upholstery either – it’s a little too bland for my liking.

Overall Impression: Now, this! This reminds me of bed and breakfast in the quaint countryside of New England! The headboard has a very commanding presence, and I love the detailed woodwork on the frame. The footboard is low, but it’s definitely something you’d want to show off.
It really brings the bed to a whole new level! I absolutely love how ornate it is, but not too much. Even the upholstery I like with this design, and I’m usually turned off by linen. In this situation, though, it just really works!
And there’s just enough space under the bed for a few boxes and the dog, and I’d probably have little trouble getting underneath to clean, which is a huge plus! The nightstands match the detailed woodwork on the frame perfectly, and they’re very well made and sturdy.
I didn’t see any of the other furniture products in this collection, but I’m super impressed by what I was able to try out! It’s sturdy, solid, traditional, with an old-world vibe that I just really love!
Martens Collection

Overall Impression: The Martens seems like a modern take on St. James. Both feature wood framed upholstered headboard, but the Martens lack the detailed woodwork that made the St. James feel the more old world. This is like the modernist take on that same aesthetic, though.
The wood frame is weathered, giving it a grained finish with a bit of texture. And I really like how the hard corners of the wood frame are offset by the rounded corners of the upholstered section.
It would look really nice in a room that either had a lot of hard lines going on to offset it or to enhance a rounded feeling. The matching nightstands also had rounded corners, which nicely complemented the headboard and gave it a cohesive feeling.
I also liked that because of the rounded edges, I wouldn’t catch myself on the corner stumbling in the night to get up to go to the bathroom! So, that’s a win in my book. Unfortunately, though, this was too modern for me and the style we’re going for.

Overall Impression: Now, this is a bed! Wow! I immediately fell in love with this the moment I saw it. The raw wood is everything! It’s so well made and sturdy, it actually surprised me. I love that it’s a true platform bed, and how the mattress looks like it’s sitting on top of the plank. It’s not – there’s actually a comfortable foundation underneath that provides some pretty amazing support.
But when you combine that rustic platform bed with the grandeur of the canopy – it just really brings this whole piece together! I love everything about this – seriously. It’s the perfect combination of the rustic and old world.
I can envision sheer white drapes blowing over the frame and more throw pillows than you can count! The nightstands that go with this collection are really well made too. Everything was well constructed, sturdy, and felt like quality pieces.

Overall Impression: I’m pretty sure this is one of the largest headboards I’ve ever seen. This bad boy will take over as the centerpiece of any room, whether you want it to or not! It definitely has a commanding presence, even in the muted color like cream. The tufting gives it an interesting look, but honestly, I don’t like the sheltered details.
It feels very closed in. The bed itself is pretty low, compared to how gigantic the height it has – which only makes it feel taller when you lay down. While you don’t necessarily need a box spring, I’d probably prefer it for the extra height alone. I think this bed frame would work well in a contemporary style room, where it can make an impact.

Overall Impression: Another example of an upholstered, tall headboard that RH has on display. This one has simple button tufts just across the middle, which is a small detail that isn’t overpowering and takes over the room, despite the size of the headboard. The headboard is well connected to the frame, but there’s significant wobble when you push on it. Again, this can probably be mitigated by placing the bed against a wall.
There is no under bed storage, as the frame goes completely down to the ground. However, you can add drawers underneath to keep things put away and out of sight. The bed is higher than others I’ve tried, and it’s easy to get up and sit on it, so you won’t need a forklift to get up in the morning.
I’m really not sure though why RH has such an obsession with upholstered headboards. I guess it’s because there are so many options that you can choose from that you can find a fabric that works with the space you’re trying to create.
Grayson Collection

Overall Impression: While this is a larger headboard again, at about 5’ tall, it has a different feel to it than the other ones. I sort of like the sheltered version, where you’re boxed in but not too much. It definitely will keep your pillows on the bed and not fall back through the crack between the mattress and headboard, or over the sides onto the nightstand.
It’s super solid – I shook it, and it had zero give. I think the sheltered detail makes it much sturdier than without it.
If you’re looking to design your room without putting your bed against the wall, this is a good choice. There’s a decent amount of under bed space for boxes or bins to store stuff out of the way, and the dog can definitely get under there. Both the bed frame and matching nightstands have a fascinating texture, almost like reptile skin.
You can really only see it up close, but it’s something I’ve never seen before, so I’m immediately drawn to it. I think this would work in a contemporary or modern space really well. For us, it’s not really our style.

Overall Impression: I like a bed frame that has both a headboard and a footboard, so I was drawn to the Maison immediately. I really like the size of this one! Both the headboard and footboard are wider than the frame, which really gives the bed a cozy feel. I also like the idea of putting a nice bench at the bottom, and the footboard really makes that possible.
It would be a good area to put on your shoes in the morning! The nailhead details around the border of the head and footboard give it that classic feel, and I actually don’t mind the upholstery in this style. It works really well!
There’s a decent amount of space underneath the bed for storage stuff, and I don’t think I’d have a problem getting underneath the clean out the furballs left behind by our beloved pooch. The nightstands are solidly built and durable, and they match the collection perfectly, creating a cohesive space that’s not too matchy-matchy, in case you’re sensitive to that sort of thing.
This would work in a traditional or transitional space really well, and would definitely be a contender for our purposes, with a different upholstery and wood finish options.

Overall Impression: I’m a big fan of the wood frames, and the printmakers’ frame is one of my favorites. It definitely has that rustic country feel to it, thanks to the wooden planks that are used to create the headboard. I wish it had a footboard, though, so I’m kind of bummed about that.
It’s solidly built and definitely durable, there was no wiggle at all when I tried to push on the headboard. Plus, the matching nightstands work really well to bring the entire room together.
Personally, I love the drawer pulls because they give that old-world feel to them, and are reminiscent of a printmaker’s cabinet. I’m sure that’s where the name comes from! I love the finish – it really enhances the natural grain of the wood, and with a lighter bedding set, it’s not too dark that it would bring down the room. And, there’s just enough underbed space to keep some items out of the way, and a cozy spot for the dog’s bed!

Overall Impression: I’m not really sure the point of this bedframe – if it can even be called that. It more reminds me of an air mattress with a regular mattress on top. There’s no structure at all, and I think the point is to make it look like it’s an extended cushion on the floor.
The platform styling leaves no under bed storage options, either. It looks a little messy – kind of like it doesn’t belong in an adult bedroom. Perhaps it’d be more of an option for a teenager’s room?
It’s super low to the ground, and because of the significant lip of the frame itself, you’d have to step wide to get in and out of bed. If not, I’d be afraid that I’d step on the frame and break it. Plus, the upholstery that’s on the floor-model would not work for us.
It’s way too easy to get dirty, and the pup’s dog fur would literally stick all around it, creating a cleaning nightmare! While it’s a good idea, and an interesting piece for a certain type of style, it’s not for us!
Chesterfield Collection

Overall Impression: This bedframe reminds me of a chaise or couch but in a bedframe style. I guess you’d call it an upholstered sleigh bed? Both the headboard and footboard have that rolled top detail that you’d find on a couch or chaise.
The button tufts also add that air of sophistication that you also get from the same style of sofa. While I do like that the Chesterfield has both a headboard and a footboard, I feel like the design itself is way too fancy for us.
It definitely has an elevated feel, and can really bring the right amount of luxury to your bedroom space. But I think you’d need to have a very specific style and vibe in mind, one that is focused on bringing that air of sophistication with a hint of femininity, on bringing this bedframe into your room.
It’s definitely not something I’ve seen before, and that makes it interesting, but at the end of the day, it’s not the right fit for what we’re going for.

Overall Impression: This is a very masculine feeling bedframe, and I think that might have more to do with the styling in the space. I actually like this one, and it really works with everything else going on in the display area, especially the mirrored chests n the background.
The headboard is very large, but it works, and I like the sheltered look on this more than I have in the other ones. In fact, I don’t think it would be as nice without the sheltering.
It’s solid but has very little underbed space – which is kind of a problem for us. However, it’s definitely durable – very little give when trying to wobble it, and you can tell how quality the materials are without even getting that up close. The seams for the upholstery are so clean and even, with no pulls whatsoever.
I think this would work in both a contemporary or modern space, and based on the upholstery options you choose, it can have both a masculine or feminine feel to it.

Overall Impression: The white linen upholstery complements the platinum legs and base nicely, and creates a really modern look. The headboard is plain, but in a minimalist kind of way and while you can get the additional details of the nailheads and tufting, I actually think that might be a little too much with this style. Those types of details, I think, would take away from the minimalist feel of this bedframe.
There’s a lip around the bed frame of about 4 inches wide, and I’d probably step on it. I’m sure that’s not what it’s made for, so knowing my habits, this probably isn’t the best bed frame for us. It’s definitely sleek and modern feeling, and I really love the white with the chrome – it reminds me of an upscale penthouse primary suite!

Overall Impression: As a wooden frame, I immediately am drawn to the Monterey! I love the big beams that create the frame, and the short headboard is just tall enough to keep the pillows on the bed. It really allows the frame itself to be the star of the show – and star it is! The platform design looks like it’s just a solid block of wood, but sneakily there is a foundation in the middle that the mattress covers completely.
So you only get the look of a platform bed and the comfort of having a stable box spring or foundation. It is a bit lower to the ground than I typically like, which poses a problem for some folks who need help getting in and out of bed.
Personally, we have bad backs, and the height would cause a problem. I’m not so much worried about “breaking” anything with the lip that goes around the bed frame since it’s definitely solid wood. But crawling over it to get in and out of bed might be a problem. The matching nightstands go perfectly with the frame, and without any hardware, it really lets the wood do all the talking. I love this set so much, and I just wish it was a little higher!

Overall Impression: I feel like this is the platform bed frame version of a lot of what Restoration Hardware has to offer for upholstered frames. I’m not a big fan of these, and I think that because the upholstery goes all the way down to the floor, with only tiny legs, it would be a problem to keep clean. Dog fur everywhere! Though, if you choose another fabric and color, it might not be an issue.
Again, there are so many options that you can choose from with this bed frame, that you really can get it to work in just about any space. I’d opt for more durable fabric, or even leather (though I don’t like leather in general), just because it’s so close to the ground and would possibly get dirty really quickly.
The boxed nature of the frame itself gives a good-sized lip, but because the frame is supported by feet and doesn’t rest directly on the floor, I’d be afraid I’d break it because I’d step on the frame too much.
I also didn’t really like the showroom styling of this piece, and really felt that the nightstands they matched with it don’t fit the vibe that the frame has. While the idea, I think, is to show how this framework can work in a transitional style room, I think it’s much more contemporary and would work better with sleeker, more modern accent pieces rather than wood and traditional ones.

Overall Impression: This bed frame looks like it’s floating, and I kind of like that element! The way that the base is recessed, with a prominent lip of the frame itself, really gives it a nice modern look. I also like the brass inlay on both the headboard and the nightstands – it really adds an upscale detail to the wood pieces, bringing it up from rustic to a more modern styling!
The frame itself isn’t too thick around the edges, and because of the height of the bed, I don’t think I’d have a problem getting in and out of it with our bad backs. I also would feel like I’d need to step on the frame or anything.
But if I did, I’m much more confident in the durability and stability with the wood and the surrounding base, than I am with other similar models that don’t have those. The finish shown is a little dark for me, and I’d prefer a lighter finish with the brass. The dark finish is a bit too masculine for my liking.
While there’s no under bed storage, I do like that this collection has multiple pieces to finish your entire room, so you can create a totally cohesive look that blends rustic and modern detailing. I’d keep the rest of the room in lighter neutrals – like cream, off-white, or even bright white as pictured – to really let the pieces stand out and make the statement.
Bed Frame Round-Up Winner
Choosing my favorite bedframe from Restoration Hardware was actually really difficult because there were a few that really caught my eye and got my design brain thinking. I tend to lean more towards style over function when it comes to my bedroom since I’m more concerned about creating the right kind of vibe in my most relaxing space.
In that respect, the bedframe that I really loved the most was the Reclaimed Russian Oak platform bed with beamed canopy.
While it’s lowest to the ground than most, and there’s no under bed storage to speak of, it really does lend itself to the exact kind of feeling I want my bedroom to evoke: a fusion of rustic, natural pieces with small romantic elements.
Really, what sold me was how solid this is, and how I could clearly picture the soft, sheer white curtains flowing in the breeze of an open window! The Reclaimed Russian Oak Collection is the perfect choice for our bedroom styling, and I really can’t wait to get it!
