There’s some argument over which room is the most important room in the house. I sometimes say kitchen, because it’s probably the room that I enjoy the most, it’s where al of my hosting happens, and it’s also where the most magic happens!
In order to come up with the very specific design ideas, we create most designs with the assistance of state-of-the-art AI interior design software.
But, when you really think about it, your bedroom is probably the most important room in your home. It’s the first thing you see when you wake up, and it’s the last thing that you see before you go to sleep. So ideally, opening your eyes and seeing something serene is probably the best boost you can give yourself to start the day.
The primary bedroom doesn’t need all that much. I comfy bed, a couple surfaces for a glass of water, your dentures, your favorite book, and your most precious knick knacks. I demand tons of huge windows for my bedroom, as well as some seriously pristine ambiance lighting.
The primary bedroom doesn’t need to be huge. That’s why we’ve prepared this wonderful collection of smaller primary bedroom ideas, to show you that bigger isn’t always better! Sometimes smaller is cozier, and all that you really need.
1. The Serene Greenery Primary Bedroom
Floors & Walls: This cozy little bedroom feels all the more cozy with earth toned carpeting and a comforting fresh sage wall color. Using white colored trim is always a surefire way to ensurer that a room still feels bright with colored walls, and helps illuminate the lovely daylight coming in from those little squared windows.
Furniture: Darker toned wood has been used for the bed frame and bed side tables in this quaint and cozy primary bedroom. Using darker tones closer to the ground do a great job of grounding, while using lighter toned accessories still makes the room feel bright and airy. This room is very classically furnished, always ensuring an inviting feel.
Decor: The decor for this bedroom is very simple and fresh. Classic lamps, classic linens, and a wonderful collection of bushy plants make this room feel serene, fresh, and relaxing.
2. The Breakfast-in-Bed Primary Bedroom
Floors & Walls: Here we have a cozy little bedroom with a gentle color scheme. Traditional hardwood floors are adorned with a faded area rug with subtle earth tones and bucolic patterning, while the walls of the space are painted a gorgeous pistachio color, offset by cream colored trim and white curtains.
Furniture: A modest bedroom furniture set made from darker hardwood is adorned with cozy cream colored linens with green throw pillows. The wooden head board acts as a great rustic counterpart to the super fresh wall color, while bed side dressers act host to a couple of lovely mid-century modern inspired table lamps emitting the perfect ambient lighting.
Decor: This primary bedroom is very minimally decorated ensuring there is no visual clutter to greet you upon awakening. Fresh green and fresh plants add that burst of life that’s always appreciated in a bedroom, while grounding wooden and light linens give you that comfort and airiness.
3. The Fresh Primary Bedroom
Floors & Walls: This stunning, moderately size primary bedroom begins with pistachio colored carpeting and a lovely patterned area rug to decorate it. Gentle moss colored walls pair beautifully with ivory trim and a built in bench. This is wonderful idea when a room is a bit lacking in space: incorporating shelving or seating directly into the wall in order to save space on furniture.
Furniture: Lighter colors in the surrounding features pair so nicely with darker colors in the centre. Here we have very richly colored bedroom furniture: a dark wooden end ottoman for the bed and matching side dressers, and a white headboard with an emblem matching the pattern on the area rug.
Decor: This is another room with a superb color scheme. Everything in the space is matching: you see either a shade of earthy green, white, or beautifully dark brown. Green throw pillows, table lamps, and mugs brighten up the space along with an array of happy plants.
4. The Modern Big Bed Bedroom
Floors & Walls: Switching gears with this primary bedroom – beachy hardwood used for the floors brings about a nice inviting and casual feel, while walls made entirely from modern artificial wood shelving really turns that casual feel on its head. Cleverly placed lighting on the ceiling makes them feel even more tall than they already are, while tall dark curtains encloses the area nicely.
Furniture: A huge bed is the only bit of additional furniture in the room, but even then it’s still built in to the foundation of the room. The headboard space has been carved out directly from the shelving units, creating a nice little cove space to rest your head.
Decor: There truly isn’t much in way of decoration in this room other than some neat little hanging lamps beside the bed. Perhaps a light colored area rug and a couple of hanging plants would really liven up the space.
5. The Boho Chic Primary Bedroom
Floors & Walls: A sublimely cozy primary bedroom that starts with sand colored wood flooring that is adorned with a super shaggy patterned rug. Primarily white walls are also boldly contrasted with one black accent wall acting as the background for the bedroom furniture set.
Furniture: This is a superbly designed bed frame. A lower set frame with a low headboard made from warm colored wood gives a real mid-century modern feel, while white bed side dressers fade into the background and act more utile.
Decor: The decoration in the room is really what makes the room feel inviting. Lovely textures come from the variety of throw pillows, while those adorable house-shaped lanterns emit the warmest of lights. A distressed mirror adds that tinge of rustic that we always love, and the pendant light in the centre of the room feels very dramatic in front of the black accent wall.
6. The Cozy Ceramic Primary Bedroom
Floors & Walls: While we can’t see the floors in this photo, we can only imagine that they’re the perfect choice for this gorgeous primary bedroom. In smaller spaces, having built in features in the foundation of the room is an incredible way to save space and make the walls utile. This gorgeous earthen frame filled with ceramic pots is uncannily charming, and pairs perfectly with the light orange walls.
Furniture: The super neat thing about this room is the majority of the furniture is built right into the room, even the adorable little bed side table. This type of minimal space is such a great way to make a room feel very relaxing.
Decor: I love the simple decoration in this room. Charming throw pillows adorn a generously sized bed, rustic ceramic pots provide texture and color, and dried grasses and a huge house plant bring that real-life aspect we always love.

7. The Minimal Bedroom with a View
Floors & Walls: Switching gears yet again with this serene primary bedroom with an open concept. Multi-colored wood stain has been used to create this gorgeous mosaic style hardwood floor, while white walls do their job as a plain background to let other aspects of the room shine.
Furniture: Here we have super minimal furniture, which I think is always a great idea in a bedroom. After all, all that a bedroom really needs is a place for your head and a surface to put your favorite book and reading glasses on! I always love a bed frame with no head board, and these quaint and tiny bedside tables do their job swimmingly.
Decor: With a view as stunning as that, you don’t really need all that much in terms of decoration. We have a simple quilted blanket for the bed, some lovely vases of flowers for freshness, and some bold artwork above the bed for a pop of color.

8. The Framed Primary Bedroom
Floors & Walls: Super light colors are the theme of this room, starting with sand colored flooring and sand colored walls. This neutral aspect is a great choice for a room that you’re going to open your eyes to every morning. Neutral floors and walls also allow for more poppy colors in the accessories of the space, which we see done subtly here.
Furniture: When you can’t be super liberal with space, it’s an excellent idea to just use one huge, multipurpose piece of furniture so that you don’t waste all of that space between pieces of furniture. A super low set bed frame not only has an end ottoman built in, but also bedside tables and a headboard. The custom piece really fits in with the neutral tones of the room.
Decor: I really adore the simple decoration of this room. Nothing but a small collection of books, and framed bold art pieces that almost look like book covers themselves decorate the space. Simple, but perfectly so.

9. The Cute & Cozy Attic Bedroom
Floors & Walls: This quaint, cozy, and incredible cute primary bedroom in an attic space starts with a gorgeous herringbone pattern wood floor – they really don’t make them like that anymore! Otherwise we have simple white walls (which in my opinion is the only color I’d ever paint my wall) with a built in book shelf. Exposed wood beams add that bit of rustic antiqueness which I personally adore.
Furniture: This room is very minimally furnished with a simple wooden frame with a headboard, some antique wooden side tables, and a white shelving unit that almost camouflages itself right into the walls. Having built in shelves in a little nook is a great way to space save if you gotta, but this room has more than enough room for what you need!
Decor: This room is adorned with more bohemian decorations, with a beautiful patterned rug, some sweet little table lamps, and a great library collection. I collect books not only because finishing a book feels like winning a prize, but also because they are pieces of art all on their own! They’re a great way to incorporate color into a room, but they also provide great intellectual value!
10. The A-Frame Primary Bedroom
Floors & Walls: This cozy and neutral toned primary bedroom begins with some gorgeous hardwood floors. This is my personal favorite color of stain because it’s warm, it’s light (better refracts that delectable daylight) and it reminds me of walking on a sandy beach. This incredible A-frame room is white walled, but what makes it really special is those amazing skylights just letting that sunlight in.
Furniture: Since all a bedroom really needs is a bed, why not make it a king? This super low set bed frame really lets the room feel taller (which is essential when working with slanted walls) while low set and simple bed side tables do their job. A couple of matching suede accent chairs topped with little fur throws add a bit of country charm.
Decor: I personally don’t love the decoration in this room. With a foundation as glorious as this, I think I would have chosen a super textured and maybe patterned blanket for the bed, and some more interesting throw pillows. Additionally the table lamps are a bit too plain, and it’s a crime that there aren’t any plants in a room with so much amazing light!
11. The Country House Primary Bedroom
Floors & Walls: This is an incredible room for a few reasons! The room starts with a dark chocolate rich hardwood floor that is topped with a neutral colored area rug. Where the room gets really special is with these amazing walls of painted wood slats. It was such a fun idea to do alternating shades for the slats creating a striped effect.
Furniture: This small primary bedroom is furnished with a fabric patterned bed frame with a headboard. A simple ottoman at the end of the bed is a great way to add an extra surface to the room, while small and minimal bed side tables are host to matching table lamps.
Decor: This is a very classically decorated room with various textures and styles of throw pillows, a beautiful throw blanket on the ottoman, and a cheeky little sun shaped mirror above the bed adds a gorgeous little splash of metallic fun.

Floors & Walls: This very simple primary bedroom design in neutral tones starts with a gorgeously modern hardwood floor with a light gray stain. We follow this color scheme through out the rest of the room with the light gray painted walls with a distressed effect, but that is offset with clean white trim.
Furniture: This very modern and very minimal room is furnished with a wide and low set bed frame with no head board. I personally love headboard-less bed frames for the openness it allows a room, especially when a bed is set in front of a window. All that’s left is a leather accent chair and simple shelving unit.
Decor: The room at the moment looks like it’s a little bit anti-decor, but that’s kind of what you think of when you see that something is Scandinavian inspired. I would personally throw a textured and warmly colored throw blanket on the bed, maybe a cowhide on the floor, and of course a wide array of house plants to liven things up. Check out

13. The Floating Bunks Bedroom
Floors & Walls: While this isn’t necessarily a primary bedroom, I think it deserved to make the cut for the very very clever way that it was designed. Starting with the floors, we have a classic wood stain with a fun and funky patterned area rug to soften it up. White walls are standard, while exposed wood panels on the ceiling are antique, gorgeous, and wonderfully rustic.
Furniture: The furniture in this space is really where things get amazing. Floating bunk beds are already a very neat touch (especially when they’re made out of such nice looking wood) but I can’t get over how the left feature of the set is.
For a moment I couldn’t figure out how you’re meant to get up to the second bunk, but then realized that’s because the floating shelving units are also meant to be the stairs to get up there! Another incredible way to space save, but also just a really cool thing to do even if you didn’t have to be frugal about your furniture.
Decor: Another Scandinavian inspired space, this room doesn’t have much in way of decor. We have a very funky patterned rug, but not so funky that you couldn’t incorporate anything else. Lovely quilted linens are cozy, while perhaps for a kids room a couple of bean bag chairs to be added, certainly some potted plants, and maybe a couple of mobiles hanging from the ceiling for some movement.

14. The Built-In Primary Bedroom
Floors & Walls: We’re finishing off this collection with this wonderfully minimal, elegant, but cozy primary bedroom, starting with a gorgeously plush and soft looking cream colored carpet with white painted walls. A light foundation like this really allows you to play with the rest of the room.
Furniture: Here we have yet another amazing example of space saving. If you have a small room and you don’t really want to sacrifice all of the space wasted between pieces of furniture, just create one giant one! Here we have a very simple and low set bed frame, with a head board that emerges into not only two small bed side drawers, but also an entire shelving unit with one closed door and one open shelving side.
Decor: I really enjoy having it so that your own personal effects are what provide decoration in a room, and we see that here with the wonderful collection of books that provide color and pattern, as well a sweet little house plant and an old fashioned clock. A gorgeous painting above to bed provides a lovely splash of color, texture, and culture!
