Welcome to our gallery featuring theย Modern Cottage in Carpathians by ARS-IDEA Interior and Architectural Design.
This luxuriously appointed cottage is awash in rich natural wood and handsome furniture choices.
The style pivots between rustic comfort and modern flair for a unique visual experience.
Designed by Arsen Kostyshyn and Catherine Lutsyuk, along with architectย Oles Tselyuh, the home was completed in 2015 in the city of Skhidnytsia, Ukraine.
Set into the Carpathian mountains, the home was destined for a distinctive high-altitude cottage style from the beginning. The designers rightly associated this image with feelings of homeyness and comfort, wrapped in wood and other natural materials.
The special atmosphere conjured in this interior comes courtesy of the aforementioned natural wood, stone, and subtle splashes of bright color. Contemporary style arrives via the shape and layout, yet is flush with traditional details.
The open plan first floor centers on the vast living room, which itself centers on a massive stone fireplace wall. This fireplace, from Norwegian brand Jotul, anchors the space with a timeless look and functionality.
Designer lighting is seen throughout the home, with geometric and floral motifs that contrast with the crisp lines of the home itself as well as the furniture.
The upper floor holds three bedrooms, each defined with a few signature touches while retaining a coherent design sense. Concrete walls are crossed with wood beamsย while colors accent each space via furniture and textile elements.
The designers noted that the essence of a home is in the details and that the interior itself must act as a stage for the furnishings, fixtures, and other defining pieces. This holistic approach has resulted in a sublimely coherent style.

The living room is stuffed with uniquely detailed furniture choices, like these contemporary armchairs and button tufted sectional, wrapped around a glass and metal coffee table. The mosaic area rug brings a burst of color to the room.
The open plan layout means that a wealth of options are available within these walls. To the left of the massive fireplace wall stands the dining room area, defined by a lengthy natural wood table and set of wireframe chandeliers.
Viewed in the opposite direction, we see the kitchen area illuminated beneath a massive window. The rich hardwood flooring connects the far ends of this space and unifies the color palette.
The living room hosts this unique freestanding fireplace, acting as a natural heater and supplementing the larger wall unit. This touch of ultra-modern design helps foster the timeless look of the home.
The dining room furniture evokes the home’s mixture of modern and traditional elements perfectly: natural wood construction meets sharp angled contemporary style on the chairs and table alike.
Here’s a close look at one of the wireframe chandeliers above the living room area. From here we can see the high contrast between dark wood flooring and lighter wood walls.
The kitchen contrasts from the rest of the open area, with dark tile flooring, black cabinetry, and light grey walls. Upper cupboards feature glass doors for a striking contemporary look.
The staircase is wrapped with glass balustrades and the same rich wood as the walls of the lower floor. This creates a continuity as one moves up toward the private bedroom areas.
Here’s one of the bedrooms, where we see minimalist concrete walls meeting sharp natural wood beams. The furniture reflects the detailed look of the pieces found on the lower level, with subtle elements of color.
The bedroom also hosts a few idiosyncratic art pieces on the walls, in addition to a truly unique hanging sphere chair near the window. Touches like this add abundant personality to the modern space.
The second bedroom boasts rich wood paneling in the corner, contrasting the neutral tone of the concrete walls and bringing warmth into the room. An artful chandelier supplements the lighting of a pair of sharp angled sconces.
Each bedroom is large enough to house a sitting area. This one features the boldest example of color in the home, with a bright red armchair and patterned drapes splashing across the neutral palette of the walls.
The bathroom is a bright burst of white in the home, with large format tiles wrapping the walls. The glass walk-in shower, floating vanity, and upper level window all enhance the modern look.
The primary bedroom is absolutely awash in rich natural wood, even across the ceiling. This space is the warmest on the upper floor, reflecting the open plan first floor most closely.
