Types of Guest Bedrooms

One of the most often overlooked rooms in a home when it comes to decorating is the guest bedroom.

You will often worry most about the family bedrooms first, followed closely by the living areas, kitchen, and even the bathrooms. Leaving the guest bedroom until last, if ever at all.

We have compiled this guide that will help you determine not only the type of room you have but inspire you to give it a design you, as well as your guests, can be proud of.

Design Elements

It doesn’t matter if you have one guest per year or one every night. The guest bedroom should be comfortable, enjoyable and welcoming. Creating the guest bedrooms to match (or clash) styles with the rest of the home can be fun.

Picking furniture will also depend on how often the room will be used or by how many people.

A. Styles

As with master bedrooms, the style or theme of the guest bedroom is only limited by your imagination and possibly budget. Here are a few ideas on styles that work in guest bedrooms.

1. Farmhouse

Source: Zillow Digs TM

The wood tone farmhouse style is welcoming and intriguing. With plenty of options for decorations to tie the whole thing together, you get to pick daring colors for the walls that you may normally overlook.

Deep reds, for example, work well with wood accents and decorations. Using reds with wood-tone furniture is sure to please any eye. You can also use brighter colors such as oranges and yellows to bring light and cheery atmosphere to the room.

Decorating with farm animal art, real wood lamps and timber bedposts will make the room stand out.

2. Modern

Source: Zillow Digs TM

Modern themes make use of striking features, bold colors, and sharp lines. Designed to be sleek and efficient, these styles are fun to design.

If you go modern for a guest bedroom, you can truly open up the color palette. Virtually any color will work, but the general uses are for a more muted wall color to set off the silver or chrome accents and furniture.

3. Contemporary

Source: Zillow Digs TM

Contemporary themes have open floor plans. Making use of large spaces is easy when decorating with contemporary styles.

Using more neutral colors with a lot of fabric and textures. The overall look is one that welcomes and embraces, which can help make your guests feel more at home.

The ability to utilize a larger floor plan is beneficial for storage ideas. If your guests are more long term, they will appreciate having a place to unpack, instead of living out of their suitcase.

4. Matching the Home

Source: Zillow Digs TM

A lot of homeowners don’t want to stray too far from the design of the rest of the home. Having a guest bedroom doesn’t mean you have to go wild. You can feel free to bring the style of the rest of your house into the guest bedroom as well.

Whatever style you choose, you should treat it like another master bedroom. Give it the attention and devotion you have for the rest of the home and your guests will enjoy being at your home, maybe more than they should.

Matching the home styles will allow you to save a little bit of money as well. You can use the same paints, colors, decorations, and furniture, which means you don’t have to make extra trips or pay a designer for an extra look.

B. Furniture

Deciding on the furniture to put in guest bedrooms doesn’t have to be daunting. You need to only worry about your theme, style, and size of the room.

You should also think about the type of guests you will have. These factors will go a long way to helping decide the size and number of beds, extra storage and how many dressers or armoires to have.

1. Beds

Source: Zillow Digs TM

Without a doubt, if you have guests staying at your house, they will want a place to sleep. Something that is comfortable and inviting.

How many should you have? A king-size? Queen? Two double beds? Maybe no bed but you have a pullout sofa or a futon. The choice is up to you, but it should be the primary decision you make regarding your guest bedroom.

The size of the room will dictate how much space is allotted for a bed, or multiple beds, and what size they should be. If you are fortunate enough to have a guest room suite, then you may opt for two queen-sized beds or a centrally located king size.

Likewise, if you are limited on floor space, a double or two twins may be in order.

2. Dressers and Closets

As guests are want to do, they will need to unpack their suitcases and make themselves at home. Giving them empty drawers in a dresser or chest of drawers is ideal. Closet space to hang clothes will also go a long way to making them feel welcome.

If you do not have a closet in the guest room, or there isn’t enough floor space for a full-sized dresser, you have other options such as rolling hangers and collapsible, or door hanging storage solutions.

3. Storage, Shelves, Etc.

Source: Zillow Digs TM

When designing a guest bedroom, you should also think about shelving and storage. This is especially true if you don’t have the floor space for a dresser or nightstands.

Bookshelves can be used for more than just books. Turning them into a smaller chest of drawers can be a way to minimize the furniture footprint in the room while providing ample storage space for your guests.

Wall shelves will usually hold nick-knacks or picture frames, but they can be utilized for holding your guest’s belongings as well.

Decorating with these items can be a lot of fun, too. With painting and attractive decorations, you can make these storage solutions tie into any style or theme.

Sizes

The size of your guest bedroom will have the largest impact on what you can do with it. Smaller rooms will not be able to hold as much furniture, for example. Medium sized rooms may accommodate a guest or two at a time while large rooms give you options for multiple beds or extra storage areas.

There are essentials that every room will need, regardless of the size, but knowing the square footage and being able to play with the layout will help you figure out just what you need and where it should go.

A. Small Guest Bedrooms

Source: Zillow Digs TM

Small rooms might seem like the biggest challenge when deciding what you want to do with space. However, it can be a lot of fun trying out new solutions to some of the bigger issues.

Because space is paramount, the right size bed is important. Too small a bed and your guests may not sleep well. Trying to fit mom and dad on a twin size may be a larger issue than where to unpack their things.

With multiple options for storage, the bed should be one of the first decisions you make for the smaller rooms. You want to give yourself enough space to move around while still being able to sleep comfortably.

B. Medium Guest Bedrooms

Medium-sized rooms will offer ample space for a dresser as well as a nice sized bed or two. Having the option for two beds is always an excellent option to have.

With a medium-sized room, you will have a closet in most cases. This can allow you to use the closet for storage of your guest’s belongings and open the space up for furniture such as seating or even a sofa to lounge on.

C. Large Guest Rooms

Large guest rooms, obviously, offer the most space for a lot of different options. Two beds will easily fit into a large bedroom. So will a dresser and a chest of drawers. Plenty of storage space for however long your guests decide to stay.

You will also have the room for making a sitting area, or a television watching area. If you have a bathroom for the guest bedroom as well, you can add that space into your floor plan allowing for more storage for their towels and toiletries that would otherwise be elsewhere in the room.

Colors

Matching colors to your style or theme is important as well. You don’t want to find yourself going after a Beach theme and having to use reds and purples for your walls. It just won’t work.

With a little patience and a little browsing of our styles and themes, you should be able to find the right inspiration for your guest bedroom. Below we offer a few examples of popular tones and how to use them.

A. Wood Tones

Source: Zillow Digs TM

Wood tones work well with many themes and styles. Adding light wood and natural wood tones to a beach theme, for example, will really bring out the nautical elements in the room.

Wood also works very well in contemporary and traditional styles. The furniture can incorporate the wood tones in either dark woods like cherry or oak, or lighter woods like pine. It all depends on your desires and how you plan to carry out the theme in the room.

Wood panel accents will bring a room together when using lighter colors for the walls and wooden accents like ceiling fans and lamps.

B. Neutral Colors

Source: Zillow Digs TM

Neutral colors will work well with a lot of themes. Their appearance muted behind the furniture and decorations, letting the rest of the room do the talking while they hold everything together.

With neutral colors on the walls and in the accent pieces, you can let other elements stand out. Bright bed linens and throw pillows or window coverings will stand out against a neutral backdrop.

Tying a room together with all neutral colors can be a challenge, but they are a safe palette when using bright (or dark) accents to make things in the room pop.

C. Light Colors

Source: Zillow Digs TM

Light colors can open up a room with minimal effort. Smaller guest bedrooms will make the most of the light colors as it adds space to the room.

Most accent pieces have light and dark options too, such as ceiling fan blades and lampshades. So even if you find the style you want and don’t see it in a lighter color, you might be able to get a similar style in a much more vivid or muted shade.

Light colors will also play well with natural light. Allowing the sun to come in the windows and bounce around the room will make it feel open, airy and inviting.

D. Dark Colors

Source: Zillow Digs TM

Dark colors don’t work as well in small rooms as they do in medium or large rooms. They will tend to shrink a small room and remove the open feeling a guest bedroom should have.

This isn’t to say it can’t be done. Rustic and Modern styles utilize dark colors in walls and accents very well without minimizing the room appearance. As long as you use the right accents and enough lighting to counteract the darker shades, you can pull it off.

In larger rooms though, dark colors can help draw the eye line where it needs to be and really make the whole room appealing and comfortable. Don’t be afraid to play around when deciding on colors.

Options

Image from Trulia

When designing a guest bedroom, you can’t overlook the details. Ceiling fans and chairs are just as much a part of the ambiance of the room as the bed is. Giving the guest an option to do more than just sleep in the room makes the room inviting and comforting.

You will want to provide nightstands, lamps and enough overhead light as possible. You never know what your guests may need, and the best option is to give them a variety.

Track lighting is a nice option, especially when you can use a dimmer switch to control them. Providing enough light to get to the bed to turn on the lamp will prevent bumps and bruises in the dark.

Whatever you decide, our photo galleries will show new ideas and inspire your creativity. Be sure to take your time to decide; your guests will appreciate the attention to detail.
