Typically, the area rug in a dining room is large and is place under the dining table.
This means finding the right area rug size is important so that it frames the table and chairs sufficiently so that it looks balanced but also so chairs when pushed back don’t push off the rug (this isn’t always possible, but it’s definitely the ideal).

The main benefit is aesthetics since functionally, in some ways rugs are more hassle than just plain hardwood or tile flooring. Let me explain.
The aesthetics cannot be debated. A stylish area rug on hardwood is a gorgeous combination. Area rugs are less commonly placed on tile flooring.
However, dining rooms suffer spill events which is where the hassle comes in.
Moreover, you need clean the space twice; vacuum the rug as well as lift the rug (no easy task with a table on it) and clean the floor beneath it. Obviously you won’t move the rug to clean the floor underneath it every time, but it does need to get done.
Another benefit is rugs provide a soft flooring which can be nice to dine on when in socks or bare feet. I always prefer the feel of a rug or carpet on my bare feet than cold hardwood or tile.
