The coffered ceiling is one of the more intricate ceiling designs. It adds depth and texture to a room often becoming the standout feature. As you’ll see below it’s a great ceiling for recessed lighting.
Recessed lighting, while terrific is a little boring on flat ceiling. However, add in the coffered design and it looks fabulous (see example above). Below we feature 60 living rooms that have coffered ceilings.

About coffered ceilings
Also called caisson ceilings, coffered ceilings are kind of like wood-beamed ceilings except you end up with criss crossed beam-like features on the ceiling. Usually the beams have a molding exterior giving it a little more finesse.
The coffered design can be simple or very intricate with engravings or molding around the entire exterior of the coffers.
The earliest known coffered ceilings date back to 7 BC in San Giuliano, Italy. Back then the coffering was done to reduce the weight of stone ceilings [source: Build.com]. Of course, now it’s done to add interest to the ceiling design.
Most coffered ceilings are built by adding faux beams to an existing ceiling. One thing to keep in mind is you should have a slightly elevated ceiling otherwise the beams will reduce ceiling height even more.
