In order to come up with the very specific design ideas, we create most designs with the assistance of state-of-the-art AI interior design software.
The ground floor holds a 3-car garage at 34’6″ x 28’6″, with a mechanical room and a compact bath tucked into the rear corner. Stairs lead to the upper living space.
Floor Plan

Two bedrooms share a central bath, opening into a great room with a kitchen and deck access.
Stone Exterior and Elevated Deck Define This Traditional Home’s Bold Profile
Stacked stone cladding covers the full exterior. Black metal railings frame an elevated deck with wall-mounted lanterns. Terraced stone steps and ornamental grasses anchor the front approach.
Designer’s Secret: Positioning a deck at the main living level on a sloped lot eliminates the need for grade-level excavation and naturally creates usable space beneath the structure. Black steel posts and cable-style railings keep sightlines open while holding up under heavy snow loads common in mountain-adjacent climates. The stone retaining wall at grade does double duty, managing drainage while providing a raised planting bed that softens the hard edge of the foundation.
Gray Leather Sofas and an Oval Coffee Table Anchor This Open Great Room

Light gray sofas face each other across an oval walnut coffee table. Wide-plank hardwood floors run throughout. Large sliding glass doors frame a sunset view over an open lawn, while recessed lighting brightens the kitchen beyond.
- Sliding glass doors blur the boundary between the interior living space and the outdoor patio
- Open-concept layout connects the great room, dining area, and kitchen without partition walls
- Recessed ceiling lights supplement natural light once the sun drops, keeping the space functional at night
Recessed Lighting and Sliding Glass Doors Pull Natural Light Into This Great Room

Cream leather sofas flank an oval wood coffee table on hardwood flooring. Black crown molding runs the perimeter, framing white walls hung with oil-style landscape and floral paintings. Recessed ceiling lights distribute even illumination throughout. A sliding glass door opens to a deck overlooking a garden, blurring the line between indoors and out.
In The Details: Black trim used as a chair rail divides the wall horizontally, a detail that adds visual weight without requiring wainscoting or additional millwork. Running the same profile color continuously from baseboard through crown molding creates cohesion in rooms with high ceilings. It also makes white walls read crisper by giving the eye a defined boundary to work against.
Dark Granite Island and Stainless Appliances Give This Kitchen a Sharp Contrast

Black granite countertops run across both the island and perimeter cabinets. White shaker cabinets, hardwood flooring, and four barstools complete the space. A French-door refrigerator and over-range microwave round out the appliance suite.
Fun Fact: Granite gets its speckled pattern from the slow cooling of magma deep underground, meaning no two slabs are identical. Choosing a dark variety like this one helps mask everyday wear from food prep and spills far better than lighter stone options.
Open-Plan Kitchen Flows Into Dining and Living With Black Granite Anchoring the Space

Stainless steel paired with black granite creates a contrast sharp enough to make white cabinets disappear into the background.
Silver bar stools line the island while yellow upholstered chairs define the dining area. Hardwood floors and sliding glass doors connect the interior to garden views.

Gray stacked-stone cladding and three glass garage doors define the exterior rendering at top. Below, the floor plan reveals an upper level with two bedrooms sharing one bath, while the main level opens into a great room measuring 34 feet 6 inches by 16 feet 1 inch, with a deck running nearly the full width.
History Corner: Carriage houses of the early 20th century pioneered the idea of living quarters built above vehicle storage, making this garage-apartment format one of the oldest hybrid building types in North American residential history. By the 1920s, many urban lots in cities like Chicago and Toronto had rear carriage houses converted into rental units, a practice that directly influenced today’s accessory dwelling unit codes.
