Reclaimed flooring is the procedure of utilizing materials that have been re-purposed to be used again. For years now, this has been a classic design process and is only becoming more and more popular.

1. It provides timeless design
Whether you’re thinking of using reclaimed wood, brick, terracotta or stone, you not only have a material that has fantastic character but is rich in history. Each aspect of the flooring has a story and when laid looks great in both contemporary and period spaces. Often reclaimed flooring is used in older buildings when restoring the floor, it provides a natural finish which gives the impression the floor has always been there.
These days, it’s very much ‘in vogue’ to match old with new. We have seen several reclaimed floors wonderfully situated in modern setups. This mix of old and new provides much more character and warmth to any space.
2. Lasts a lifetime
These products were not created with costs and profit margins in mind and were made to be strong and withstand a lot. As such reclaimed wood, brick, terracotta or stone last a lifetime. Usually, the materials originate from abandoned or derelict buildings where demolition is the only alternative.
The buildings have long since been unoccupied, yet the materials stay as strong as ever. They are normally re-purposed for flooring and once laid and sealed correctly, they last a lifetime. As soon as you have laid your reclaimed floor, you can be certain that it will last any damage that you place on it.
For these reasons, they are ideal for areas with heavy foot traffic like cloakrooms or commercial areas.
3. Environmentally friendly
Reclaimed flooring is environmentally friendly. Producing more is having a greater impact on our environment, there is already perfectly good stone and brick to be used. You probably also realized that over-forestation is a big issue, it’s important to preserve what we have left.
Re-using already great products has a positive effect on our environment. If you are somebody who is socially conscious, I would advise looking into reclaimed materials further.
4. Layout adaptability
There are so many different ways to lay reclaimed flooring. Modern engineered products are created without much room for creativity or change. But reclaimed flooring can be cut and changed in a number of different ways including:
- Herringbone pattern
- Stretcher bond
- Basketweave
- And so much more …
You can also couple brick with wood for a diamond inlay effect. Brick and stone can additionally be cleaned with lime or even painted. The choices are nearly limitless.
5. It’s Unique!
Because these floors have been made when contemporary production methods were not available, you can be certain you are getting a special flooring that is entirely bespoke to you. Brick and terracotta were commonly hand-made, dried out in the sun and heated up in a kiln that did not create an even temperature and so each floor tile or panel is unique in its own way. If you purchase reclaimed flooring, you can be sure that it is one-of-a-kind.
Each tile or panel varies in shape, dimension as well as color. It is not just distinct but this un-uniform appearance can offer personality to your design project.
6. Reclaimed simply looks better
Have you ever heard the saying “aged like a fine wine”? This is the same for reclaimed flooring. As such they only get better with age.
Their slight tone and color differences provide a beautiful floor that cannot be reproduced through modern techniques and engineered products.
7. Increase in value
You can increase the value of your home or building. Using reclaimed flooring is often the preferred choice, especially in the country or period homes. Having this can provide even more authenticity to your house.
Houses that keep or renovate with reclaimed or salvaged materials tend to sell much quicker. If you are looking to increase or keep the value of your home, reclaimed flooring could be a great option.
