My mom is a very good piano player. We always had the piano she inherited in our living room. She played regularly and it’s a sound I’ll forever associate with growing up. While I don’t play (sadly I refused to pursue piano lessons as a kid despite my mom’s efforts), we also have an electronic piano in our family room for our kids.
While there are many types of pianos you can buy for your home, there is perhaps nothing quite like a grand or baby grand situated off to the side in a living room. Of course, you need the space, but if you have it, it’s a terrific piece that not only looks fabulous but can provide for wonderful entertainment if there’s a pianist in the house.
While pianos are an intricate piece of furniture and a musical instrument as well as expensive, it can be an investment that lasts generations. Below we feature living rooms of all sizes, colors, and styles with a piano.

Is it common for a living room to have a piano?
No, it’s not these days. We feature 1,000’s of living rooms across many galleries but very few include a piano. Reasons for this include:
Cost: an elegant piano is not cheap. Many people, if they buy a piano, opt for a less expensive piano placed elsewhere in the home.
Lack of space: A piano takes up a lot of space and living rooms are usually already filled to capacity with furniture.
Entertainment alternatives: 100 years ago, music was a main entertainment option in the home. However, these days we don’t sit around the piano listening to people play.
Electronic pianos: Instead of spending thousands on a piano, more and more people opt to buy a less expensive electronic piano. Our sons received a really great electronic piano from their grandparents for Christmas. The sound is amazing and very similar to a real piano (I can’t tell the difference).
Fewer kids taking piano lessons: Check out the charts below and you’ll see the downward trend since 2004 for “piano lessons” which indicates fewer people are seeking to enrol kids in piano lessons.
