Galley Kitchen Design Ideas
The Galley kitchen is based on the cooking area in ships at sea but interpreted a bit more loosely; it’s a pair of parallel countertops with a path through the middle. Galley kitchens certainly aren’t for everyone, but in some spaces, a galley kitchen can be a sight to behold and a joy to work in.
Slaving Away In The Galley
The modern galley kitchen has two countertops and is typically very densely packed, relying on both flat countertop space, hanging tools, overhead cupboards, and under the counter cabinets to make sure that everything comes together nicely.
In a galley kitchen that’s well designed, you’ll find that everything is within an arm’s reach, whether it’s the door of the oven, the handle of the knife from the block, or the switch for the garbage disposal.
You’ll be twisting and turning around a lot when you work in a galley style kitchen, so make sure you keep that in the back of your mind as you come up with design ideas. The best galley kitchens make great use of their vertical space to hang utensils and other items which are needed at a moment’s notice.
Is Your Galley Kitchen See-Worthy?
Many galley kitchens have access to natural light via windows on one of their surfaces, which can brighten up the entire area. Other galley kitchens are closer to their original shipborne counterparts, and only have artificial light to keep them feeling charming.
If you only have artificial light for your galley kitchen, make sure that it’s a warm and inviting light that matches your cupboards—you’ll be seeing them a lot, and you don’t want anything that’s too reflective in the small space.
Speaking of the small space, most galley kitchens are made so that there’s only enough room for one person to be in the kitchen and to pass through the galley at a time. If you plan on having a lot of helpers, you may want to consider making the passageway of your galley kitchen a lot wider, most likely at the expense of counter space.
Some galley kitchens are paths to other parts of the house, whereas others are dead ends. If this is in your control, try to make your galley kitchen into a path to another part of your house—it’s a much more pleasant and open feeling than the cramped-in-the-belly-of-the-ship feeling that can result otherwise.
