What is a tray ceiling?
It’s a ceiling where the main center area is indented while the outer edge drops lower. It can be slightly indented such as a few inches or extremely indented several feet. It’s called a tray ceiling because it’s like an inverted tray stuck to the ceiling.
It’s also referred to as a recessed ceiling. For dining rooms with a very tall ceiling and if so inclined, you can do a double-tray ceiling which is like steps of inverted steps dropping into the center of the ceiling.
What does a tray ceiling do design-wise?
It creates depth and can nicely frame a room. It also adds design texture to space. It’s particularly nice in dining rooms because the outer lower edge frames the dining table which gives an overall pleasing effect to the eye.
Should the ceiling be higher than average?
Yes, especially if the depth of the recessed area is significant. You don’t want the lower edge to be lower than a regular ceiling. Which means the indented area will be higher than the regular ceiling height.
Dressing up a tray ceiling
You can go with a plain look or dress it up the following ways:
- mirror;
- lighting such as recessed lights embedded in the outer ridge;
- art/mural;
- mosaic;
- trim;
- wallpaper;
- decorative molding.
Lighting
Because the center of the ceiling is above-regulation height, you can suspend lights without encroaching into the dining room space. Besides, suspended or hanging lights such as a chandelier or pendant light is ideal for a dining room table. The out ridge can have a nice ring of recessed lighting to supplement the pendant lighting in the center.
For dining ambiance, it’s a good idea to have all lighting dimmable.
