I took a trip to the Bassett Furniture retail location in Austin, Texas, and reviewed all the bed frames that they have in their showroom, so you can learn what they’re really like before you step foot into the store!

Methodology

Bassett Furniture is one of the leading retailers for high-quality, customized furniture at reasonable prices in the United States. They have more than 60 retails stores throughout the country and Puerto Rico, and their locations have interior designers on staff who offer incredible customer service. They want to ensure that you choose the piece of furniture that is both a reflection of your style and your space.

My trip to Bassett in Austin focused on taking pictures of all the bedframes that they have on display. This way, you can see how they’re styled and how they might work in your space. For this review, I checked out the sample bed frames on the floor and noted which additional options you can have. However, if there’s a piece that you’re curious about but would like further customization than what’s listed, definitely reach out to your local Bassett!

Any review you read really comes down to personal opinion. To be as transparent as possible, I’ll let you know what I’m looking for in a bed frame. If my views, preferences, and priorities don’t line up with yours, that’s okay! You’ll at least know whether or not you can take my word for it!

Also, to be as unbiased as possible, I didn’t snap to judgment on any piece and tried to imagine a space it would work in. Hopefully, this helps you determine whether or not something is worth your time for further investigation on your shortlist!

For this review, I’m looking for a bedframe for my sister’s guest room. She’s creating a space for the family to stay when they visit. Space will also double as a craft area for my sister, where she can get away from her four active boys for a little quiet time to herself.

She prefers to keep the room light and airy and would rather a more feminine look. Being surrounded by boys all day, she really would like a space that feels like her own. To that end, we’ve decided to go with a French country styled space, perhaps with pops of bright color here and there for a contemporary feel. Goal feelings are reflective, peaceful, and creative.

Shoreline

Overall Impression: For that coastal feel, the Shorelines delivers. You can choose between either a simple paneled headboard or the louvered version, which I much prefer because it definitely gives it that beach house feel! It reminds me of Bahama shutters!

I like the fact that this bed has a footboard, plus the additional customization options of having two storage drawers underneath. This would be a great feature for my sister’s guest room, so she can have some extra storage space for craft supplies and extra linens. With a boatload of kids, keeping clutter down is all about providing storage options and making sure that everything has a place!

The Shoreline has a shorter footboard, and really lightens the room, creating a border but also keeping the space open and airy. Again, it’s incredibly stable where both the headboard and footboard are well attached to the frame, and there’s very little give when you wobble it.

As far as style goes, this works really well in any coastal or vintage rustic space, depending on the color of finish you choose. I personally like the white, distressed finish because it really enhances the shabby chic look, while also maintaining that beach house feel thanks to the design itself.

Ventura

Overall Impression: The Ventura is a neo-traditional styled bed that you can choose either the hardwood paneled headboard or optionally for an upholstered one. I personally don’t like upholstered headboards, and the showroom piece only shows the paneled one. But if you’re looking for a more unique, customized design, you can go into a Bassett and create your own! (Such a great perk!)

The headboard itself is very tall, and almost my height. It definitely has a commanding presence in the room. I personally like the whitewashed finish, because it gives it that cottage or farmhouse look that is comfortable and casual.

It’s a solid frame, and the headboard and footboard are both really well constructed and attached to the bed. There’s minimal wobble when I push on it. The under-bed space is a little lacking, which poses a bit of an issue for my sister since she’d be looking to store her craft supplies underneath.

Overall Impression: BenchMade collection from Bassett is genuinely that – it’s handcrafted by artisans to order. The BenchMade Maple uses custom selected maple wood from the Appalachian region of the United States. When you order and customize one of these bed frames, one of the Bassett artisans will create it exactly to your specifications. There will indeed never be another one like it, and you can bet on that!

The showroom BenchMade Maple bedframe features a live edge headboard. I love this! And because each one is custom made, each live edge will be different – you’ll never have the same as anyone else! Also added here is the fabric upholstered panel, which is optional. I’m not a big fan of upholstered headboards, so I’d personally go with solid wood. However, if you’re looking to create a modern industrial space with rustic accents, this is the perfect bed for you! Especially with an upholstered headboard, because it’s the perfect mix of rustic and traditional looks that really make the whole space come together!

Because the bed frame is made to order, by hand, I’m not surprised that it’s 100% solid! There is no give, and this is definitely one of those pieces that you’d pass down to your kids and grandkids, thanks to its heirloom quality and uniqueness. While it’s a bit much for my sister’s guest room, this is definitely on my list for when we redecorate our home!

Modern Aster

Overall Impression: I’m really not sure why every bed in Bassett has humongous headboards, but the Modern Aster is no different at over 5’ tall! However, it creates an exciting contrast to the lower platform frame itself.

Combining gorgeous wood grain in a wash that highlights the uniqueness of the wood, with a tufted upholstered headboard and metallic accents, this is a piece that really does put a modern spin on industrial styling! I actually love this look, because it’s so unique! The geometric shapes and sharp, clean lines are genuinely modern through and through, but it’s the use of mixed materials that really give it that industrialized feel.

What I don’t like, however, is that there isn’t any under-bed space at all. The bed is a platform bed, but is a closed base all the way around that goes right down to the floor. It’s recessed to give a “floating” look, which is excellent, but I’d prefer to see if I can get some storage drawers in there or something. Always good to ask a Bassett designer about what else is possible with any of these styles of bedframes!

Overall, I’m loving the mixture of material, stability and quality, and the shape and design. However, for the room I’m currently working on, it’s not the right fit. It would look gorgeous in an urban oasis, with rustic, modern stylings and lots of clean lines. I’d definitely need to add more metallic accents to really highlight that piece of the bedframe itself in the Aster since I think it really makes the whole piece!

Woodridge

Overall Impression: Combining rustic and modern, the Woodridge is a bedframe that is designed to be a centerpiece for your space. It’s incredibly tall headboard (over 5 feet!) create a presence in the room. The double frame is modern, while the tufting and nailhead trim gives it an upscale elegance.

What I find really interesting about this bedframe though, is the footboard. The woodgrains are arranged to create an arrowhead design, which really doesn’t look like it belongs with the rest of the bed. It’s an eclectic mix of styles in the same piece, that would really need to include more eclectic pieces in the room that could be anchored by the Woodridge.

Again, solidly built with a sturdy frame. Due to the height of the headboard, though, it is more wobbly than others I’ve looked at. However, this bed is meant to be placed against a wall to create a centerpiece, so that shouldn’t be an issue when you get it home.

Personally, there’s a bit too much going on here for my sister, and we’re also looking at absolutely no under-bed space. Not my style, but a reliable choice if you’re looking for a piece to bring different style elements into a cohesive look.

Verona

Overall Impression: If you’re looking for that perfect antique rustic bed frame without hitting up estate sales or auctions, the Verona is here for you! Crafted to mimic a rustic antique that’s been passed down for centuries, this bed frame is a gorgeous piece to add to your home that will bring a vintage feel to your space.

There are also a variety of options for you to choose from, including the different washes. I really like how they pay detailed attention to the look of the wood – creating that aged, textured look that’s actually smooth to the touch.

While the headboard is a bit high for me – it’s nearly as tall as I am – it’s not as sturdy as I would like. However, again, against a wall would be perfectly fine. I love the different panels, and the attention to detail is really amazing.

I prefer the whitewashed finish, since it gives it a lighter, more distressed look, while the grey waxed finish in the showroom is definitely more of a rustic vibe. I’m more interested in the farmhouse look for my sister’s room, so I’d prefer white. However, if I was designing my own bedroom, I’d go with the grey wax finish because I really love that rustic look!

Modern Emelia

Overall Impression: A modern take on the European inspired leather and wood frames of the 1920s, the Emelia is a perfect addition to your home if you’re looking for a sleek, upscale design with modern styling. The contrast of the embossed leather and wood frame is very masculine in look and design, and wouldn’t work as well in a lighter, feminine space, in my opinion.

Original shagreen is made from the hide of a shark or stingray and became popular during the reign of Louis XV in France. Today’s shagreen is a replica of the original – there’s not any shark or stingray skin going on here. However, the unusual granular texture of the original is intricately recreated by Bassett in the Modern Emelia line, giving it the same luxurious, upscale look and feel.

Combining that with the simplicity of the clean, modern lines of the wood framing with the luxurious shagreen leather creates a piece that is both refined and elegant, modern, and classic. Unfortunately, with only 5.5” of under bed space, there isn’t room to store much. I love the tapered legs that give it a refined look but would prefer a metal leg over the wood to add to the modern styling.

As far as my sister’s guest room, this is not at all in her wheelhouse. But it’s an excellent design for a modern, contemporary space, where you’re combining old and new textures and materials with modern shapes.

Bassett Bed Frame Round-Up Winner

While Bassett has so many options and tons of customization to create the perfect bed frame for you, choosing which style is where the tricky part comes. For my sister’s guest room, we decided on the Shoreline bedframe. It adds a casual, relaxed vibe to the guest room, which she’s really looking to create as her space to get away from the kids. And we love the whitewashed color, too, because it lightens up the room and gives it that airy feel. The coastal cottage vibe is perfect for what she’s going for. Plus, she loved the under bed storage option for squirreling away extra blankets and supplies.
