Types of Hardwood Flooring for Stairs
Luxury hardwood stairs don’t need additional coloring to heighten their appeal. Durable, fine-grained mahogany has a warm, even color that ranges from tan to dark brown, depending on the type of mahogany you choose.
Yellow-brown teak wood has good texture and grain. Teak contains silica and natural oils, which helps repel pests.
Road oak and White Oak are the most popular hardwood flooring. Red Oak has pinkish undertones has gold or brown/gray undertones. Red Oak contains moderate to heavy graining.
Other types of domestic hardwood used on staircases include:
- Ash – Similar to White Oak, its unique graining may be curly, wavy or straight. Color varies from white to light or medium brown.
- Beech – Warm brown with reddish undertones, this hardwood has straight, tight grains.
- Walnut – Add warmth your stairs with this chocolate brown hardwood. It’s one of the softer types of hardwood, with a Janka hardness rating of 1010.
- Birch – Red Birch is golden brown with red undertones, and Yellow Birch has a creamy white color with yellow undertones. All birch tends to be fine with even curls.
- Hickory – White to a medium brown wood with variegated graining, it’s usually used in wider planks due to the busy graining.
The treads (what you step on) and risers (the part holding up each step) may be made of bare hardwood or painted for contrast. You may also place a rug runner over the treads and risers for more visual appeal, and to help prevent slippage. Putting tile on the risers is also another great way to give hardwood stairs a unique look.
Care and Considerations
Consider the following pros and cons when making your decision to choose hardwood staircases:
- Hardwood stairs are slippery, so look for another material if you have young children or older adults living in your house.
- Acclimate hardwood to your home’s atmosphere for about a week before installing it. Doing this will ensure that the wood won’t shrink when exposed to humidity in the summer months.
- Unless stained, most hardwood species are light or medium-colored.
