You don’t see tile staircases as much as our other designs. Tile can be slippery, and most people think of it for bathroom and kitchen designs, not the staircase. Our staircase photos feature 68 tile designs, featuring everything from contemporary to industrial tile staircase design ideas.
Tile is a durable alternative to wood and metal stairs. You can even install tile that looks like wood, marble, stone or stone. Your stairs need to be designed and reinforced for tile. The stairs should also be deep enough, so nosings aren’t needed.
Mexican and Southwestern Motifs
However, you can use tile to decorate risers between wood or concrete treads. Often seen on outdoor staircases and in Mediterranean-style homes, the tile often has a bright Southwestern motif. Some tiles are mosaics or have hand-painted designs, and many decorators encourage the use of different patterns on each riser. If you want to complement a Mexican or Southwestern design in nearby rooms or just brighten up your house, mosaic designs may be a fitting addition.
Not all mosaic tiles are colorful; some have simple blue and white or black and white designs to add contrast. The color scheme of adjoining rooms will determine the best colors for your tiled staircase.
Solid-Colored Tile
For a more refined look, use light or rust colored tile or slate on risers. They may be used on risers, treads or both, and you can mix and match colors for a unique look. Create a smooth, flowing color scheme by choosing laminate tiles for your stairs to match laminate floors. The laminate may be used on treads, risers or wall strings (the side of the staircase) or balusters.
Design Styles to Fit the Rest of Your Home
Modern designs may feature tiled steps with glass balusters or free-floating treads in a curved design.
If you want a more traditional look, use white laminate risers underneath blond wood treads. When coupled with a curved design with wood banisters and spindles, it gives your entrance way a spacious but classic appeal. This design complements tile or laminate flooring in a foyer and surrounding rooms.
If you have a Mediterranean-style arched doorway or other Spanish-influenced designs, a curved stairway with clean white tile or marble wall strings beneath curled spindles indicate an elegant charm.
Use tile as part of a transitional staircase to give your staircase a design that combines warm traditional elements and sleek contemporary style. A half-turn staircase with mosaic on the treads and risers paired with rustic red spindles, baluster, and newels may be one of the most original designs we’ve seen recently, and it certainly fits in the transitional category.
