Youโve seen a quarter-turn staircase or maybe you even have one. Quarter-turn stairs (also known as L-shaped stairs) are straight stairs with a bend in one portion of the staircase.
A landing is usually added to achieve the bend. The landing in a quarter-turn staircase is placed near the middle of a staircase. Itโs called an L-shaped staircase when the bend transitions at the top or bottom of the staircase instead. The landing changes the flight of the stairs by 90 degrees and gives people a place to rest during their climb.
A quarter-turn staircase looks more interesting than a straight staircase and offers many unique design possibilities.
Pros and Cons of Quarter-Turn Staircases
Pros
- Quarter-turn staircases take up less space than straight stairs
- You canโt see the upper floor from the lower floor, so quarter-turn stairs give you added privacy.
- You can place quarter-turn stairs in the corner of a room.
- Quarter turn stairs are safer than straight flight stairs because the landing provides a rest stop.
Cons
- These stairs require more planning and are difficult to build.
- Handrails for quarter-turn stairs are harder to construct.
- When used as basement stairs, the design may make it difficult to move large items upstairs.
Quarter-Turn Staircase Designs Come in All Sizes
A quarter-turn staircase works well for any size space, from tight corners to sunny living rooms. Medium-sized designs are the most popular, some with floating wood treads and sleek metal handrails. Other medium designs include the more traditional wood stairs with risers. Some designs employ carpets or runners, but most use bare wood.
Small quarter-turn staircases fit in corners, and you can accentuate them with brightly painted walls, artwork, or oval-shaped windows.
You have more design choices with large spaces. You can experiment with handrails and spindles, using original designs and combination wood/metal railings.
Use Quarter-Turn Staircases in Any Style Home
Traditional quarter-turn staircase designs use the same building blocks as other staircases โ wood stairs, with or without carpet, and wood balustrades and railings. The railings, as well as the newels at the bottom of the stairs, may be painted for contrast.
Wrought iron balusters and a mahogany railing make a quarter-turn staircase pop visually and add a dramatic flair to otherwise smooth design materials.
Consider using metal and glass if you want a wide-open, modern design, A contemporary quarter-turn staircase may have wood or metal slats without risers and glass “siding” instead of banisters, with metal railings.
