Having a large dining room raises as many questions as a smaller one. Space becomes an element in the room that will influence all of your other choices. It’s wise to consider its impact on everything including wall color, lighting, and furnishings. You’ll be surprised to learn just how much size can affect the mood you create. It’s an issue for about 30 percent of these rooms.
One of the quandaries you have a large room is creating a space that seems inviting despite the size. That’s especially true with a dining room where you want guests to feel welcome. The other issue is filling the space without it seeming forced or cluttered. The same rules of decorating still apply like balance and symmetry.

Choosing a Wall Color
White is the favored color in over one-third of dining rooms. It acts as the ideal backdrop for the starring attractions, namely, your furnishings. It won’t conflict with other shades, making it such a versatile choice. It’s an excellent option for creating the impression of a larger space. If that’s your goal, go for it.
However, there’s a risk of making a large dining room feel lonely or stark—especially if it’s a cool shade. To make the space more inviting, opt for a warmer color like beige or even a pale yellow. Does your room have a taller ceiling too? Go with a two-toned scheme instead to make it seem smaller.
Add a Nook
Divide your large dining room in half by creating the impression of two rooms with a nook. This strategy works well if you have a feature that naturally divides the room like a fireplace. Add a couple of comfy occasional chairs to make an intimate place to chat after a meal. You can use furniture in a complementary color or style to create a focal point.
You can get the same effect with a decorative screen. Like a nook, it adds a sense of mystery to a room that will draw guests into space. You can choose something more exotic such as a Japanese shoji screen.
Fill the Vertical Space
Make wise use of large dining room by using the vertical space too. A group of themed paintings will make an attractive accent to fill bare walls. You might also consider ceiling lighting for a signature piece. It’ll draw attention to the piece rather than the size of the room.
