Sometimes tragedy turns into new possibilities. In the case of the owners of this Colorado-based property, the opportunity was creating the home of their dreams with Barrett Studio Architects.
Following the historic 2013 floor in Niwot, Colorado, the homeowners and animal lovers of the Water-shed property were left starting their lives over. Thanks to donations from the community, including neighbors, friends, and strangers, they built a budget-friendly house on a beautiful piece of land.
The Living Space
Although the budget was top of mind during the construction, that didnโt mean they wanted to skimp on space or amenities.
The space features 2,000 square feet of functional space that are arranged in an open floor plan for maximum usability. Built with entertaining in mind, the modern kitchen features top end appliances and a large center island that can seat six. The gourmet cooking space opens into the main living area and accommodates a large dining room area and mini bar, which flows seamlessly into the living room.
Floor to ceiling glass french doors open to the paved and covered patio, creating a flawless transition between the indoor and outdoor gathering areas.
Materials
Not only was it constructed to be budget conscious, but material choices throughout the process keep it financially friendly.
Barrett Studio Architects used cost-effective materials, like HardiePanel siding and corrugated metal in the structure. The owners opted for polished concrete floors which provide a passive heat source, and are an easy surface to clean, whether theyโre wiping up spills or paw prints.
Design Choices
Just because this mountain view Colorado home is nestled on a large parcel of land, doesnโt mean it has to look like a country estate. While it features rustic touches, like a shed roof, interior sliding barn doors, and a quaint log fence, it also incorporates modern elements to create a blended aesthetic.

Glass walls, large windows, concrete floors, and modern lighting and appliances balance out the look and feel. Matching light cabinets with sleek finishes in both the kitchen and primary bathroom suite compliment the scheme, and classic white subway tiles with dark grouting are a timeless and classic design choice.
