I love having a garage. The previous 3 homes I lived in I did not have a garage. Now I have a 2 car garage which I love.
I enjoy keeping it organized, staying dry and warm getting into my car and having additional storage.
However, for reasons that are incomprehensible to me, the garage doors are very narrow with very little clearance on each side of vehicles (and we don’t have large vehicles). We’ve already crunched a side-view mirror. Fortunately, my new car electronically folds side-view mirrors in making it easier to drive in and out.
Our garage bay entrance conundrum got me thinking about what are the standard garage dimensions. I did some research and had my super talented graphic designer put together diagrams that set out the standard garage dimensions.
Please keep in mind the following are guidelines. You can build them bigger if you like (I would if building a custom garage). Here they are.

1-Car Garage Dimensions (Diagram)
Many townhomes (growing in popularity) have a 1-car garage. Also, perhaps you have a sizeable property and want to build an additional garage. If so, it helps to know the dimensions. Here are the key numbers:
- Garage doorway width: 9′
- Garage interior width: 12′
- Depth: 20′
Ideally, you’ll have 2.8′ clearance on each side of the car.
2-Car Garage Dimensions
The most popular garage is the 2-car garage. We have one and I love it (I’d really love a 4-car garage, but am grateful for what I have). Here are the key numbers:
- Garage doorway width (double door): 16′
- Garage interior width: 18′
- Depth: 20′
3-Car Garage Dimensions
If you’re building a 3-car garage, you’re moving up in the world. As kids start driving, it’s not unusual to have 3 cars in the family and so a 3 car garage is handy. Or, you enjoy more garage storage space. Here are the key numbers:
- Garage doorway width (double door): 16′
- Garage doorway width (the single door): 8′
- Garage interior width: 28′
- Bay depth: 20′

4-Car Garage Dimensions
Few homes have a 4-car garage. It’s a sign of a luxury home. Here are the key numbers:
- Garage doorway width (double door): 16′ (each)
- Garage interior width: 36′
- Bay depth: 22′
TIP:Â The garage in the house I lived in had an extra deep bay which was ideal for storing bikes. Moreover, the ceiling was vaulted which allowed for a loft… even more storage.
The point is if you’re in a position to design your own garage, do consider space for storage and be creative. Adding 5 to 8 feet in depth offers a great deal of storage/work space that you’ll appreciate for years.
