The approach to designing this spectacular home located in the heart of wine country was no different. This stunning property is majestically situated at the outer ridge of a winding country road in the mountains above Sonoma. Sited on 18 acres of rich vineyard soil, this ultra-modern home was just five years old when purchased, but our client wanted to add personal touches and greater functionality.
They entrusted us to furnish the entire residence, including all the china, stemware, and linens. Our goal for this property was to pay tribute to the surrounding landscape and views while infusing it with a chic contemporary vibe. Furnishings were to be unique, powerful yet neutral enough so as to let the views be the star.
The client wanted to highlight the home’s contemporary style yet infuse warm touches and an eclectic mix of furniture, art, and sculpture in the interior design. Although the home was wonderful in its existing state, our clients wanted to create a wine room that serves as the home’s centerpiece, befitting such a prestigious property in America’s wine country.
By retrofitting part of a wall in the main living area with a glass partition and center door matching the home’s entry, the property now has a stunning focal point from the moment you enter. The current wine room makes use of the raw concrete that forms the house’s shell.
The room became a work of art with the addition of a spectacular backlit, onyx wall flanked by the owner’s fine wine collection, held in space through an ingenious dowel wine rack design that extends directly out of the concrete wall creating what looks like dozens of fine wines floating in space.
The custom hand-blown glass chandeliers, made specifically for the home in Czechoslovakia, evoke the pop and fizz of sparkling wine’s bubbles adding a sophisticated drama and playfulness to the home’s main living area. A beautifully crafted olive wood bar designed by San Francisco artist Tyler Bradford and flanked by vintage stools reupholstered in a lush Kravet fabric now brings the outdoors inside with its masterfully carved olive planks whose nooks and crevices are artfully filled with resin.
The piece is contrasted beautifully by a large abstract painting in homage to one of the homeowner’s favorite actresses, Bridget Bardot, custom painted by Brazilian artist Claus Costa. Of course the outdoor pool was a necessity for a home intended as a retreat. The streamlined simplicity of the design enhances the natural beauty of the landscape.
Keeping the view as the focal point was essential, hence we created an outdoor counter overlooking the mountainscape. The finished result is a stunning modern escape that promotes relaxation, rejuvenation, and restoration.
