This Transitional Dining Room paired meaningful family pieces with more modern touches to give this family the transitional design they love, while providing function.
This home in Ashburn, VA is owned by a couple that was looking to update their dining room and formal living room from the 90โs to today. They desired a beautiful space that made them proud to entertain in again. They are empty nesters, with a college graduate and another whoโs halfway through her college career, and wanted to ensure we made smart investments in the space so they could enjoy gorgeous finishes now and set it up for new owners to enjoy in the future. This couple was ready to host and couldnโt wait to get started and we couldnโt wait to show them a new beautiful space!
They desired a kitchen refresh as well, which we achieved with a new coat of paint on the cabinets, a backsplash, and brand new countertops.
Sophistication at its Finest.
In the formal living room, we brought in four new chairs with flared legs that provide a sleek, stylish silhouette and make an ideal spot for lounging. A round, rich navy tufted velvet cocktail table also acts as an ottoman. A chandelier with crystal droplets that dangle within diamond fretwork is show-stopping and brings in just the right amount of sparkle. The Persian-inspired rug has a well-worn look that grounds the intimate conversation area without taking over and the artwork is a beautiful distressed navy blue abstract modern dandelion. With a perfect balance of elegance and comfort, this transitional living room has a feeling of sophistication without being stuffy.
In the family room, the existing stone fireplace was the centerpiece of the space. We toned down the orange/reddish tones by bringing out the grays and creams with new paint colors and intentional styling elements. We love how the artwork in this space was large enough in scale to help break up this massive wall and give it some breathing room.
When designing the Transitional Dining Room, we utilized family heirloom pieces as well as furniture that was important to this couple. We updated the paint color to a rich navy blue on top and utilized white for the chair rail and below. We brought in rugs, draperies, drapery hardware, buffet lamps, Chinoiserie accessories on the sideboard, and the perfect marriage between old and new. The art is a 3D abstract seascape epoxy resin geode that is crystal hand-painted.
Minor updates, big difference.
In the kitchen, we brought in a new kitchen table, chairs, and a light fixture above the table. The light fixture is brimming with contemporary style and fits into this transitional kitchen perfectly. In addition to new African Rainbow granite countertops, we selected three gorgeous new pendant lights to hang above the richly painted, navy island. The kitchen is the perfect place to show off the eye-catching backsplash in navy, grays and white mother of pearl and provides a modern take on an offset subway style, with rectangles in various sizes to mix up the pattern. We paid close attention to the smallest of details, such as the new cabinet hardware. These kinds of small details make all the difference!
