Richard Pryor is thought to be the most influential stand up comedian of all time. He’s certainly the most controversial. His love for counterculture and profanity paired with his outspoken and unfiltered personality created quite a bit of notoriety.
His Sherwood Forest, CA home is luxurious without being pretentious. Its design and decor are understated and classic. It sold recently for $2.5 million to Rashard Mendenhall, a former NFL player.

Richard Pryor is known for his particular brand of profane humor. It’s been said that comedy comes from pain, and he had more than his fair share. He used his experiences as inspiration and brought racial awareness and honesty about what it was like to grow up as a person of color to the masses. In addition to being a famous comedian, he was an accomplished actor and writer as well. He’s well known for Blazing Saddles and his role alongside Gene Wilder in Stir Crazy.
The Pryor Estate
The estate has 9,000 sq ft of space between the six buildings on the property. The main house is 5,759 sq ft and has four bedrooms and four baths. The living room has white walls, hardwood floors, and a vaulted ceiling with lots of exposed wood beams. An arched doorway leads to the main dining area that continues the simple yet decadent style.
The master bedroom features white walls and carpet. The vaulted ceiling has exposed dark wood beams. The french doors lead to a private balcony giving the room a spacious and airy feel. The master bath features earthy colors, a walk-in shower, and a luxurious drop in tub. Palm trees on the walls and arched windows complete the look.
The kitchen is modern with recessed lighting, stainless steel appliances, and white cabinets. There are a white marble island and a beige marble bar. It has a brick accent wall framing the stove for a stunning focal point.
Amenities include a wood sauna, wine cellar, a game room with a terra cotta tile floor, a billiard room, and a large library. Other buildings include the children’s playhouse, guest house, fitness center, pool house, and a dance studio.
Outdoor Areas
The Mission Style mansion is surrounded by lush plants and the Loggia provides a stunning view of the grounds. The brick patio features a sitting area and a fire pit perfect for entertaining on cool evenings. There’s also an outdoor dining area with a stone archway covered with hanging vines. In addition, there’s another outdoor dining area.
This area features a brick patio and countertop complete with a barbecue grill and a large picnic table. The garden area is filled with flowers and palm trees and provides a stunning entrance to the home. The lush greenery extends to the custom lagoon-style swimming pool and a decorative fountain. There’s also a tennis court and a mini-golf course. In addition to the decorative garden, the estate has a vegetable garden and an orange grove.
