J.C. Morris, an insurance salesman from Alaska, fell in love with Ketron Island in Puget Sound the first time he saw it. To him, it was an idyllic paradise that so sparked his creative juices, he just had to own it. So in 1946, he bought the island and built his own home there in 1963.
The Prairie-style house looked like it was right off of Frank Lloyd Wrightโs drawing board with its 5,310 square feet and one-and-a-half-story on its five-acre lot above the sound. Huge windows across the length of the house guaranteed stunning views from Anderson Island to Steilacoom and their 1,000-foot stretch of beach below.
Morris originally had big ideas of developing the 221-acre island to house hundreds of residents. But the current 20 residents love it there because the rest of the crowd never showed up. They love peace, space, quiet, and not locking their doors. The county and the island residents work together on zoning to ensure an abundance of green space, parks, protecting the ecosystems and identifying their priorities to keep it the little paradise it is.
Classically designed and beautifully maintained, the house has four bedrooms, six baths, including a detached guest suite on the other end of the large carport separating it and the main house. There is also a separate, fully equipped guest house next to the water with a deck overlooking the water, which can also be used as a caretakerโs house. Included are the living room, dining room, den, family room, recreation room, wine cellar, huge laundry room, and eat-in kitchen.
It is located on the northern point of the island with water views on three sides and a 160-foot dock that will accommodate watercraft and mainland friends. Four ferries run each day, only 10 minutes to reach the town, or take your own boat. For more information.
