This is the front view of the charming house. Here you can see the lovely dark wooden exterior walls complemented by the warm outdoor lamps as well as the lovely landscaping.

This is a closer look at the main entrance of the house with a wooden main door to match the wooden exterior walls. This area is adorned with lovely planter on the side of the concrete walkway.

This view of the lovely patio of the house showcases the large open walls of the house giving the dining area a view of the landscape on both sides.

This is a close look at the dining area of the great room. Here you can see that the large dining table has a darker wooden tone as the light hardwood flooring and the ceiling.

This is the simple foyer with a modern staircase bordered with glass. It has light wooden steps that match well with the hardwood flooring.

The second-floor landing has a gorgeous glass wall on one side and a row of windows on the other side to ensure that the area is constantly bathed in natural lighting.

This family room has a charming L-shaped sectional sofa with a red tone that contrasts the light hues of the coffee table and the hardwood flooring.

This home office has a large wooden structure built into the wall filling it with shelves and cabinets. This is paired with the glass wall to give the black desk and black chair with a nice background.

This is a charming nursery with gorgeous colorful murals dominating the walls with depictions of plants and trees. This gives a nice splash of color to the neutral tones of the crib, armchair and dresser.

This is a charming and comfortable reading nook with a built-in wooden floating daybed with a cushion under the window. This is adorned with a large wall-mounted painting and a spherical pendant light.

The primary bedroom has a large floating bed with white sheets to make it stand out against the gray area rug topped with a golden chandelier. On the side of the bed is a large wooden structure that has built-in cabinets, shelves and fireplace.

The bright and white spacious primary bathroom has a large bathtub in the middle under the bright skylight. On the side of the bathtub is the glass-enclosed shower area with the same bright tone as the rest of the bathroom.

This is the view of the backyard from the vantage of the second-floor window. Here you can appreciate the beautiful swimming pool surrounded by a lush landscaping filled with tropical trees and shrubs.

This view of the house from the pool makes you appreciate the lovely row of windows of the second floor where the second-floor landing is.

This is a look at the poolside patio with cushioned lawn chairs and a dining set adorned by the lush landscaping. This view also shows the large colorful painting on the wall just outside the dining area.

This close look at the backyard pool shows that it is bordered on one side by low shrubs and trees and the other with a tall wall full of vegetation. At the far corner, you can see the jacuzzi-style pool near the lawn chairs.

Organic architecture experts Kristopher Conner and James Perry of Conner + Perry Architects were commissioned by a deeply-rooted Los Angeles couple to design a home that seamlessly fits their family and lifestyle, while also showcasing a world-class art collection and effortlessly blending into a beloved section of Santa Monica Canyon.

Taking cues from the property’s surrounding Oak and Eucalyptus trees, the firm designed a residence that allows for reflection, openness, and serenity. Key design features include windows that frame the magnificent trees, extended canopy-like, cantilevered eaves, and fully pocketing glass exterior walls that open to a central courtyard to offer the perfect balance of indoor-outdoor living.

Every view in the house was designed to captivate with either nature or art. Initial plans by John Lautner protégé, architect Duncan Nicholson, set the stage for Kris and James, formerly with Nicholson’s office, to complete and enhance the project, despite his untimely passing.

The property was formerly home to a modest California 1940’s era cabin situated on a wooded lot that began as a test station for the Forestry Service during their Eucalyptus tree testing in the 1910-20s. It was important for the clients to honor this history and salvage as much of the original house as possible. Given their love for the neighborhood and its majestic trees, they repurposed felled Eucalyptus wood found on the property into outdoor furniture and key elements within the house, including the grand entry doors.

In keeping, exterior materials for the new home were selected for their organic nature, ability to age in place, and compatibility with the climate, such as charred wood siding (Shou Sugi Ban), copper, exposed steel, and concrete. Interior materials were chosen to reflect the nature outside, including a mix of massangis grey limestone and French oak for the flooring, weathered brass, blackened steel elements, and a variety of marbles and tiles, including art tiles by Lubna Chowdhary.

For the clients, who both grew up in the neighborhood, the chance to collaborate on the design process and build a space for their impressive art collection was a dream. For Conner + Perry, the home represents exactly what the clients were seeking — a quintessential California indoor/outdoor experience where everything feels open and unified.

“Each of them has described the house as having a magical or mystical quality, allowing light in at the right moments, as well as the shadows of the trees, and a calming mirroring effect,” says principal, Kristopher Conner.

Conner + Perry Architects was founded in 2015 in Santa Monica, California by partners Kristopher Conner and James Perry, who came together while working with Architect Duncan Nicholson. There they both were trained in the philosophy and tradition of Organic Architecture as it was taught to Duncan by a world-renowned primary of modern Architecture, John Lautner.

The legacy of this architecture can be traced back through Lautner to his predecessors, Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan.
