Popular YouTuber and interior designer Nick Lewis definitely has an eye for good design, and this short video explains one of the basic rules of home design that everyone can use.
The trick is called “the rule of 3,” and it’s often used in designing homes to create layers and better visual balance. Nick explains that grouping things in sets of three can actually take the guesswork out of planning your home.

He says that odd numbers are more appealing to the eye, which is one of the reasons why grouping in threes is so popular. Nick goes on to say that one item by itself can look and feel a little bit boring because there really is no balance or visual interest. As for items grouped in pairs or in even numbers like four or six can feel stale and many people feel like it looks too “staged.”
But when you put items in a quantity of three together, it suddenly looks much more dynamic and interesting. He said that groups of five or seven can also work, but it can sometimes be a little bit harder to work into your space simply because more items take up more space.
Nick explains how you can incorporate the rule of three into your own home. You can group décor pieces in three by stacking books or vases in groups of three to create symmetry and interest. You can place the items on top of a coffee table or a media console in your living room for a nice touch.
Another important tip that Nick mentions is that you should play with the size and height of the objects. The more variety you have, the more interesting everything will look.
You can also bring in your accent colors in threes as well. Nick says if you want to add a pop of color to a room, don’t just add it to one item but instead, consider grouping it in threes like a bright pink pair of chars complemented by some artwork in a similar hue on the wall. You can also group your lighting in threes. Nick says to look at beautiful pendants that you can install directly above your kitchen island in threes.
