Margaret Hamilton was born in 1902. She spent her earlier adult years as a schoolteacher before working as a character actress in a variety of films. The role of the Wicked Witch of the West that defined her image, and indeed her legacy across decades, came after seven years of smaller films. She went on to appear in a number of other films, television sitcoms, and even commercials, as well as numerous stage performances.
Stemming from her earliest career, she had a lifelong commitment to public education. During and after her career as an actress, she was also known for her passionate advocacy, working on a number of causes related to children’s benefits and animal rights. She died in 1982.
Hamilton’s gorgeous Hollywood townhome is one of several located near Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, called Courtney Villa. It was originally built in 1926, and the current owners completely restored the property and updated it to a more contemporary style.
The townhome is part of a small complex, which shares a pool and cabana. The pool is surrounded by tropical landscaping and tall trees and is made completely private by virtue of sitting amidst the surrounding villas. Beyond that, the entrance to the villa itself is walled and gated, making the entrance totally private. This space is also home to a garage, a beautifully-planted terrace, and a private roof deck.
The home is 3,035 square feet, with three bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. The formal living and dining rooms are spacious, with wood floors and a fireplace in an elegant open design with arched doorways between rooms.
The fully-updated eat-in kitchen features a gorgeous kitchen island, with stainless steel appliances, elegant beige walls, and hardwood flooring. It also boasts beautiful natural light. There is also a large family room, with a cozy built-in bookshelf that can house a television, as well as a full home office and a separate den.
Just beyond these rooms and through a set of French doors is a private patio with beautiful terracotta tiles in a herringbone pattern. Above is a fully finished rooftop deck, complete with wrought-iron railings and a tidy lawn overlooking the surrounding hills.
The complex is very highly rated and has historical status as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. Additionally, the location is unbeatable, as it is close to dozens of restaurants, clubs and bars, and many Hollywood studios.
This beautiful Hollywood villa, once home to The Wizard of Oz’s Margaret Hamilton, is now on the market. The 3,035-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom townhome is listed for $2.4 million.
