If you have been longing to add a kitchen island to your cooking space, this project can cost quite a lot of cash if you’re planning to have it installed by a professional. But one YouTube creator made a helpful short video that shows exactly how they completed the process from start to finish. If you’re feeling bold, then this little video might be exactly what you need to try this DIY project on your own.

Project Steps
First, the creative DIYers took three lower cabinets with drawers and attached them together in a straight line. They decided that they wanted a bit more counter space that was deeper than the standard depth of 24 inches, so they added some 2 x 4 pieces of lumber to frame out a bit more length. They said the frame would add about six more inches to the back end of the cabinets, and that the plan was to make the countertop another 12-15 inches total.
The creator said that you can add a cabinet panel to the back side of the island, but in her case, she decided to give it a little bit more character by adding some shiplap. This is also a great way to create visual interest in your kitchen. As for the sides, she mentioned that you can get creative by adding more storage or a wine rack.
For her, she just decided to attach standard cabinet panels using wood glue and a brad nailer. Doing this creates a nice, seamless look without a lot of bulk. She also attached a piece of outside corner molding to the corners to bring everything together and make it look nice and neat.
When everything was completed, she painted the back of the island a beautiful gray color to match the rest of the kitchen. As for the countertops, she added a stunning sparkling white quartz which looks incredible against the gray.
She also used long black metal drawer pulls that really pulled the modern look together in my opinion. She mentioned that she got the handles from Amazon, which just goes to show you that practically anyone can do DIY things if they just do a little bit of hunting online.
People Love It – Feedback (We Love it Too)
A lot of people loved the video, including viewer Justin Allen who said, “As someone who has flipped homes, this is accurate and affordable! You could even use IKEA cabinets as your island base.”
Another person named Adan Gonzalez gave this YouTube creator quite a lot of props, saying, “As an engineer who worked many years in the construction industry coming across many beautiful examples of cabinetry, this DIY idea definitely is the most creative and aesthetic that I’ve seen. Congratulations!”
I agree that this awesome little YouTube Short is a great example of how to DIY something that looks overwhelming, but is actually quite simple as long as you have the materials and the tools. I really like how she added the shiplap to the back, the choice of black drawer pulls, and the gorgeous white quartz countertop.
Overall, this custom kitchen island looks incredible. And what’s even better is that it definitely looks like something many people could try on their own especially if they want to add something to their kitchen on a budget.
