Expert interior designer Nick Lewis definitely knows all about the best ways to design and decorate a home. Now, he recently released a YouTube Short video explaining some reactions in design to three of the most popular interior design styles that are currently driving all the trends for 2023. For this video, he chose three reactions to the most popular styles for the last several years including boho, Scandinavian, and mid-century modern.
You can check out the video right here to see what he has to say:

The first reaction he mentions is postmodern, which he says is proving to be very popular among Gen Z people. This style has less of a focus on functionality and how things are used in the home and more on the weird, quirky, and fresh.
The photos he uses showcase vibrant colors, unusual shapes, and a mixture of different designs to create an eclectic look, including colorful, bright velvet furniture, funky wall art, and the ever-trending mirror with a squiggly-shaped frame.
Nick says that a lot of these styles have a nice alternative to some of the more modern couches people tended to use in the past. Then, he mentions that modern isnโt really going anywhere but instead, itโs just evolving to be more organic.
This statement brings us to the second design trend driver which is โmodern organic.โ He says that this is a much more minimal style and instead of using plastic or mirrored finishes for things like furniture and dรฉcor, more earthy finishes and materials are being used.
This includes rougher finishes and more neutral colors rather than bold, metallic shine or vibrant and bright hues. He says that the organic modern design utilizes colors inspired by nature. Think of colors like sage green, soft beige and tan, or dark brown just to name a few. Materials like wood, cotton, wool, stone, jute, and concrete are all very popular in the modern organic style.
Finally, Nick says that traditional interior design is back and that more people are on the hunt for intricate detailing in their furniture and in elements like wood and stonework. This interior design style evokes a really cozy and comfortable vibe that makes your house feel like a home.
It might be surprising that the traditional style is back, especially after so much buzz about the postmodern designs weโve been seeing in recent years. But according to Nick, this style is particular popular right now because itโs very comforting after years of stark minimalism being the style of choice.
Viewer Jhennica Morrow liked the idea of organic modern and new traditional designs together and said, โNew Traditional and Modern organic incorporated together! Yes! Add some desaturated colors for interest and I am a very happy person!โ

Another viewer called Aspiring Furniture Flipper said, โI love traditional style with a bit of other styles in little artifacts I like. But my biggest annoyance is that literally anything made out of wood is labeled as shabby chic farmhouse and it makes me want to puke.โI think Nick hit the nail on the head about the modern organic style.
Todayโs โmodernโ is less cold and industrial and more natural and warmer. While I am not personally a fan of basic traditional designs, I can totally see how a lot of people are looking for more details in their furniture and dรฉcor. More details make everything a lot more visually interesting and appealing, but it doesnโt necessarily have to be traditional, per se.
Overall, I do think that the three styles he discussed are trending and each of them certainly shows a stark contrast to the popular styles in the past years, particularly postmodern and Scandinavian. I think boho and organic modern can happily live together since they both have that warm, natural, eclectic vibe.
So, what do you think about these three styles that Nick says will be driving trends throughout 2023? Are you a fan, or are you more into the other styles of the past few years?
