Meet Trish, 46, who lives in rural Kansas in a rented detached house. There are three people in the household: Trish, a child between 6 and 12, and a parent or in-law.
Trish is primarily responsible for bringing in the household income, which she puts in the $0 to $50,000 range. Everyone who works, works outside the home.
The household eats dinner together about four nights a week, usually in the living room or in front of the TV.
When asked what she does particularly well when it comes to running the household, Trish’s answer was pretty straightforward: “Nothing….it’s a lovely chaotic mess for about 4 years now.”

Walk me through a normal weekday evening in your household.
Kid gets home about 3:30 pm.. most days I meet her on porch to try and talk to her before entering the “dead zone” (a.k.a. anywhere she can go and zone out on her phone or youtube). I ask her question about her day, specific classes, if i know if issues with subjects, teachers or friends I’ll ask her about that. I try and ask open ended questions so that she will engage in convo with me but more days than not, that simply doesnt happen. Most of the time I get a “I dont know”, “yeah, it’s fine” and “o.m.g.! Why are you asking me all these questions?? I just got home and im ⁶super HOT and just want to change and cool off”. Then storms off to do whatever and pretty much like that until it’s time to argue about taking a shower and going to bed.
Where does your household spend the most time together?
Honestly, we don’t spend much time together in one place.
Is there a room or space in your home you barely use?
No.
What’s one thing your household does that other people might find strange?
Not sure that we do anything like that.
What’s one thing you wish you’d done differently?
More strict and chores for kids.
What’s the one house rule everyone in your household knows?
Pick up after self.
Is there something you or your household spends money on other people would think wasteful?
I smoke cigarettes.
What would fall apart if you left for a week?
Everything.
What do you argue about the most?
Getting up and going to school.
How similar is your household to the one you grew up in?
Very different.
What’s the biggest difference?
Had chores, high expectations, didn’t sit around watching TV all the time, had consequences when something we did was not right or didn’t do something we were suppose to.
What did you swear you’d never do that your parents did?
Yell or be loud most the time and be happy with whatever results came from childs school work or extra curriculum activity as long as they tried thier hardest and gave the best of themselves to whatever they were doing.
What’s something about your household you wouldn’t normally admit?
It’s a mess.
